About this listen

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets First Lie Wins in this electric, voice-driven debut novel about an elusive bestselling author who decides to finally confess her true identity after years of hiding from her past.

Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

As a young adult, she and her best friend Amanda dreamed of escaping their difficult homes and moving to California to become movie stars. But the day before their grand adventure, a tragedy shattered their dreams and Cate has been on the run ever since, taking on different names and charting a new future. But after a shocking revelation, Cate understands that returning home is the only way she’ll be a whole person again.

Hated the ending

Not a fan of flat endings, happy but flat. it lacked the details that were shared throughout the whole book. Neat and tidy endings seem like the easy way not.

Entertaining

It was a good story but at times lacked depth and nuance. It also was tied up a little too nicely. The main character does something pretty terrible to just be forgiven so easily or accepted back.

Flash backs and forwards

There were a lot of different flash backs and forwards and the story kept going back and forth between characters. Some characters I didn’t feel need to have a one of chapter. Overall it was a good read and in the end we all need grace.

Fantastic Book!

This book is our generation’s Rubyfruit Jungle but far more satisfying and better written. Excellent work.

The Story Was Clever

I enjoyed the storyline and the characters were well defined. I also liked the different voices. The switching back and forth was very hard for me to follow and it got confusing so I had to listen a few times to get it all straight (which was not a bad thing lol). I imagine the print version would have been easier to follow, to a degree. It definitely helped having it read by several people.

Loved it!

Gah! One of those books that you’re watching the minutes left and not wanting it to end. I can’t wait to find more of her books.
