About this listen

REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK!

“This story swept me away with its big dreams, love, and unexpected twists.” —Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club January ’25 Pick)

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets First Lie Wins in this electric, voice-driven debut novel about an elusive bestselling author who decides to finally confess her true identity after years of hiding from her past.

Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

As a young adult, she and her best friend Amanda dreamed of escaping their difficult homes and moving to California to become movie stars. But the day before their grand adventure, a tragedy shattered their dreams and Cate has been on the run ever since, taking on different names and charting a new future. But after a shocking revelation, Cate understands that returning home is the only way she’ll be a whole person again.

The performance was excellent. As you listen you feel the passion, fear and frustration each character speaks of.

The little golden nuggets woven in the story.

If you choose one, read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This was a fine book—very similar, yet less entertaining as Evelyn Hugo.

Predictable, but interesting

Expected more. Not my kinda love story. Short chapters kept me asking who was talking now.

Didn’t have empathy for characters

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but as several other people have pointed out, I think it would be better to read rather than listen to the audio. There are so many characters/time changes, that I think I would have enjoyed it more as a traditionally read book. Even though I struggled at first to keep it all straight, but it was worth the effort. It was different and interesting. The narrators were great. Well worth the read or listen.

Enjoyable read!

I truly enjoyed the listen and all the turns however, all conflicts just suddenly resolved in a neat little package.

Then It Was Over

I still have many unanswered questions that I thought the ending would cover. And the way the main character reacted in the end was lackluster. The plot itself was okay, but was hoping the ending would make the read worth it. If you’re someone who needs closure, you won’t find it here. For a more entertaining series, go for the Abby Jimenez books. They’re a lot funnier and have better endings.

Poor Ending

It was just okay. I think I wanted more from Annie and Amanda. Didn’t love it.

It was okay… didn’t love

I LOVED this book. It pulled me in immediately! Very well written and kept me interested from start to finish.

Very unique concept

The plot was good. Narrators GREAT! But the book didn’t have to be so long. The ending was meh. The author took their time to develop the characters and show different points of views, but the ending lacked the same discipline. And the main character’s actions her consequences were meh as well. I had to make myself finish and then again the ending. Not a bad ending just it’s not fulfilling.

Not bad, but not good either

Cate Kay aka Cass aka Annie lacks basic communication skills and blows her life up multiple times. She is a frustrating protagonist and she has no depth of character. This book doesn’t hold a candle to Evelyn Hugo or the First Lie Wins.

Cate Kay Needs Simple Communication Skills & Not Three Lives
