Story
Despite her success setting a self-supported Fastest Known Time record on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013, Heather “Anish” Anderson still had such deep-seated insecurities that she became convinced her feat had been a fluke. So two years later she set out again, this time hiking through mud, rocks, and mountain blazes to crush her constant self-doubt and seek the true source of her strength and purpose. The 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia, did not make it easy.

I just really prefer the author to narrate. It doesn’t sound authentic and the inflection is all off when its a 3rd party. I did enjoy it once it got into the AT hiking diary piece but theres a lot the beginning that was all over the place. It’s a good read/listen though - you get some good visuals and learn about challenges along that particular route

Story
On the eve of turning 30, terrified of being funneled into a life he didn’t choose, Jedidiah Jenkins quit his dream job and spent 16 months cycling from Oregon to Patagonia. He chronicled the trip on Instagram, where his photos and reflections drew hundreds of thousands of followers, all gathered around the question: What makes a life worth living? In this unflinchingly honest memoir, Jed narrates his adventure - the people and places he encountered on his way to the bottom of the world - as well as the internal journey that started it all.

Nice little adventure,
Reviewed: 04-14-24
I really liked the storyline and the adventure. The little tidbits of history as he moved into each new region was a good touch. Particularly the history of Machu Picchu. He did a good job of explaining the scenery so you could visualize. I could’ve done without some of the personal stories. I do like from time to time telling us what was on his mind in the stressful pieces of the trip, but I didn’t necessarily need all the background on his sexuality. Just felt like it was kind of missed place and unnecessary. I do feel like when you’re out in nature hiking and going through really challenging strenuous activity, there is a certain spirituality to it, so I appreciated some of that, but there were also moments of it where i felt we’re also not unnecessary. It’s a rather long book that I feel like could’ve been condensed. And there was even half of one chapter that I felt like I skipped through a lot of. Overall, it was very well written, I know the author narrates it, which usually is an added bonus because they know the story so well that they actually add to the value. But I felt like his tone and inflection were kind of boring and when I listen to the sample, I didn’t purchase the audible book because he seemed very monotone and blah. But he does a good job of differentiating the quotes by changing his voice and accent just a little bit so that you know who’s speaking whether it be his mom or companion. so overall, I would definitely recommend it, but I can’t say I would be interested in “ listening” to another book.

It’s just a bunch of stories, and I thought it was going to be more along the lines of giving you ideas and explaining to you how this helps and how the mind works. But I just couldn’t get into it. I really didn’t care for the narrator. He does try to use inflections, but since most of its stories, and there’s so many quotes, I just have a hard time, listening to one narrator, read the entire thing.all in all I’m just gonna archive it and I probably only listen to maybe an hour of it

I really enjoyed listening to this. There’s a lot of comedic relief in there, a little bit of drama, and with that a little bit of suspense. I love the way it was narrated as if she was telling you the story in person. I felt like I was there walking with her. As somebody who eventually wants to hike the Appalachian Trail, this kind of helped me prepare in a way. Because she talks about the things she did, and should’ve done. Highly recommend for hikers and adventure seekers.

I wish oh Gisele would have narrated the whole thing, but the person they chose did a great job as well. There’s some great stories in there and ideas of things that she does, that I was able to apply to my life. There’s also some stuff, like a long segment about her dog, that I could’ve done without, which is why only 4/5stars. But overall I listen to it every morning while I was getting ready for work and on the way to work, and I found myself wanting to turn it on. She came off is very relatable to me and seems like a very down to earth good person.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

I really enjoy that he narrates this himself. I’ve had a hard time finding audible books that I can tolerate, listening to the narrator. But this was great, because his inflection and his personality comes out in his reading and it’s almost like he’s having a conversation with you. He brings up some examples of when he was governor, and when he was a bodybuilder and an actor. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and told my husband about it and as he was listening he would tell me about a piece he really liked.

Not what I was expecting. Dont care for the narrator they picked. His enthusiasm is there but his voice is hard to listen too. I would rather of David narrated it himself. The interviews are un-needed. I feel like he looses me there. I’m finding it hard to finish the book. It’s just a bit “much” if you know what I mean! I’m not motivated by it and I feel kinda angry/negative after listening to it. Not what i was hoping for

I felt like since the author was the narrator there could’ve been some more enthusiasm and enjoyment in her tone. Even my 13yo son said “she’s boring, shes gotta read like she’s tellin a story” and I agree.
Part 3 was a little more whiney and pitiful, but I really enjoyed the adventure pieces about the slot canyon and all the places they went. I love how the dogs are keys characters.

The narrator ruined it for me
Reviewed: 11-01-22
The message is probably really good I just couldn’t listen past half way through part one. The narrator voice and the way he “reads” it is dull and hard to listen to. I prefer the ones where it sounds more like they are speaking the book to me as if they wrote it and its a podcast. I cant stand when its dry and flat and the voice they picked it just not for me
