Story
Hana and her little sister Emi are part of an island community of haenyeo, women who make their living from diving deep into the sea off the southernmost tip of Korea. One day Hana sees a Japanese soldier heading for where Emi is guarding the day's catch on the beach. Her mother has told her again and again never to be caught alone with one. Terrified for her sister, Hana swims as hard as she can for the shore. So begins the story of two sisters suddenly and violently separated by war.

What a fantastic book!
I can't recommend this highly enough. The story telling was superb, Michelle kept a strong pace with the unfolding events, whilst maintaining a feeling of intimacy and warmth.
There are personal gems and wise words throughout. I was eager to hear it all but now I've finished it I'm a little lost, like a friend's gone homeafter a fab weekend and now the house is empty.

This is a story well told, revealing harrowing experiences without being depressing. It really brought history alive and left me more knowledgeable.
It does demand some persistence at the beginning though, but I'm so glad I didn't give up.
Highly recommended - it was an insightful and inspiring read.

Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She's even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy. And then she sees something shocking. It's only a minute until the train moves on, but it's enough. Now everything's changed.

Unforgettable Narrative that Gets Under Your Skin

I approached this book with reservations, 42 hours of listening time, some grim reviews & a harrowing subject matter! But although it took some time to get into it, I found it intriguing & compelling.
The characters became my companions, as I learned more about them I wanted to spend more time in their company.
There were certain phases when the sheer misery was a chore, but most of the time it was addictive.
If I had to pick 3 words to describe this book - shocking, uplifting, intriguing.

I highly recommend this book to women who have known what it's like to forget who they are, and need some inspiration to reach for the stars again!
