Story
The Greater Middle East—the vast region between the Mediterranean and China, encompassing much of the Arab world, parts of northern Africa, and Asia—existed for millennia as the crossroads of empire. But with the dissolution of empires in the twentieth century, postcolonial states have endeavored to maintain stability. Robert D. Kaplan explores Greater Middle East through reporting and travel writing to reveal deeper truths about the impacts of history on the present and how the requirements of stability over anarchy are often in conflict with the ideals of democratic governance.

Reviewed: 01-20-24
I read with great interest and concluded that Kaplan was not only a reasonable observer, but he was also good at putting the pieces together. I can see his biases and his limitations. I respect those based on who he is and how he was raised. It is a book I strongly recommend. I learned a great deal from several chapters I read twice and probably go back to read again in the future. These days, we often hear that the map of the Middle East will be redrawn; I am sure whoever is on the drawing table all of them have read this book several times.

Story
Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

While this book explores world history from the big bang to the present day, it principally covers key people, events, and empires since the dawn of the first civilizations in and around 3500 BC. Epic in scope but refreshingly concise, A Short History of the World is an excellent place to start to bring your historical knowledge up to scratch.

Story
From the KGB to the Kremlin: a multidimensional portrait of the man at war with the West. Where do Vladimir Putin's ideas come from? How does he look at the outside world? What does he want, and how far is he willing to go? The great lesson of the outbreak of World War I in 1914 was the danger of misreading the statements, actions, and intentions of the adversary. Today, Vladimir Putin has become the greatest challenge to European security and the global world order in decades.

Putin is a dangerous street tug but he now sits as the head of Russia with large nuke arsenal,. USSR had at least a polit buro a group of communists to make key decisions now there is only one man Putin and he can and will resort to nukes. The real evil empire is Russia under Putin. Excellent book highly recommend it.

Everyone has heard of Erdogan: Turkey’s bullish, mercurial president is the original postmodern populist. Around the world, other strongmen are now following the path that he has blazed. For the first time, Erdogan Rising tells the inside story of how a democracy on the fringe of Europe has succumbed to dictatorship. Hannah Lucinda Smith, Turkey correspondent with The Times of London, has witnessed all that has befallen Turkey and the wider region since the onset of the Arab Spring.

I saw the book in an audible and purchased it with enthusiasm. I have been living in Istanbul for the last 12 years and was truly interested in an objective outside view of this person who has been ruling Turkey for the last 20 years.
She starts with Erdogan but gets into details of terrorism, archeology anthropology linguistic history, and racial issues where she fails to understand most if not all of these topics and she forgets the topic of the book: Mr. Erdogan. she loses objectivity and therefore credibility. By chapter 10 I could not continue reading. I am sorry but I am disappointed. An observant journalist could have written all the bad things and whatever little good things about this person without really digging into topics where her knowledge does allow.

It seems amazing in the middle the USA 21st century such extreme religious groups exist. The author's journey is somewhat similar to my father's move from a village in Turkey to the city where he got an engineering degree. Not quite a Cambridge Ph.D. but one must consider that he was in Turkey not in the USA.
