Story
Called Out is a deeply personal book from Paula Faris, the beloved on-air reporter for ABC News and former co-host of The View. She shares her journey through conquering fears that nearly kept her from the high-profile, high-stakes world of broadcast journalism, and then the dangers when that world threatened to consume her. She burned out and faced public humiliation, physical breakdowns, and family struggles. But along the way, she heard God gently calling her out of that dangerous place.

A memoir about Calling
Reviewed: 10-18-24
The author, Paula Farris, did a wonderful job of telling the story verbally and orally. I gained a better understanding of the two types of calling from the author’s examples.

Story
Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer—they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

I like to read YA Lit from time to time because I teach HS English and it helps me to talk about books teens read. This one was surprising I thought it would be entirely about the girl, but it had several stories.

Story
Greg LeMond stunned the sporting world by becoming the first American to win the Tour de France in 1986, defeating French cycling legend Bernard Hinault. Nine months later, LeMond lay in a hospital bed, his career as a bicycle racer seemingly over. And yet, barely two years after this crisis, LeMond mounted a comeback. In 1989, he once again won the Tour - by a narrow margin of eight seconds. It remains the closest Tour de France in history. The Comeback chronicles the life of this great American athlete, from his roots in Nevada and California to the heights of global fame.

The audio version was good. I was disappointed by the story’s focus on LeMond’s personal struggles with Armstrong.

Challenging and Enlightening Memoir
Reviewed: 02-01-23
This book was enlightening and challenging to read. It was enlightening because it is a memoir of a young, African-American woman, and I am an old, white man. Prescod shares the difficult moments of her life growing up in a mostly-white community and working in the fashion industry. The challenging part is understanding the role I played in the lives of minorities who I have grown-up around and worked with. This book made me reflect on my actions and words that caused harm to others.
