Abandoned by MI6 after a disastrous operation against the CIA, Milius has slowly rebuilt his life in Madrid. Amazing - get Spy by Naturefirst on PLUS!

These two books are incredible. I'm not going to tell you anything about the plot, but one thing I really enjoy is the way Alec is always analyzing everything everybody else says; trying to gauge their motives; it's pretty cool. And I just loved the first one which was on PLUS but there was no way I'd not get the second one. I'm not done with it but it's about the same spy.
Super entertaining and very tense at times.
Highly recommended.

Story
Daniel Rice is a government science investigator whose specialty is solving seemingly intractable problems through scientific inquiry. But Daniel's intellectual strength is sorely tested by the bizarre realities he finds in the quantum world. Extra dimensions of space trap the unwary, probability replaces cause and effect, and time isn't what anyone imagined. The other side of the mirror is a place full of dangers, but it's also somewhere a dedicated scientist can uncover secrets that connect humans with something greater.

So great
Reviewed: 03-02-25
This is a very unusual sci fi book; a lot of science explained, and the author comes in and says what's fact and what's fiction. The first book starts of benignly enough but gets pretty tense after a while. The second book is a bit more tense, a bit quicker than the first. And the third is - very - spooky in places.
You get to care about the main characters and this alone is a sign of success of course. For comparison, the last best sci fi I read was Three Body Problem, which is amazing. This is different, but almost as good.

Story
Tackle your thorniest problems using the wise fool's savvy strategies! The wise fool is the archetypal contrarian known for his creativity, irreverence, and humor. He looks at life in unorthodox ways and pushes back against the status quo. Throughout history, powerful decision-makers (Egyptian pharaohs, Chinese emperors, Persian sultans, and European kings) consulted wise fools to question the assumptions that kept them mired in stale and obsolete solutions.

Really liked the playful tone and content, and the anecdotes and good ideas. It reminded me a bit of that almanac in the beginning of Benjamin Franklin's autobiography.

Love Life serves up another delicious selection of intimate stories and observations from Rob Lowe's life, told with humor, warmth, and brutal honesty. After writing his acclaimed debut effort, Lowe felt he had more stories to share and many more friends to introduce. The result is a touching memoir about the business and craft of acting, the pitfalls of success, family, love, and much more.

Just incredible

I'm just finishing listening to this for the second time. I just love this man. I grew up when he was a teen idol but didn't pay any attention to him back then. When I saw The West Wing many years later, I became an instant fan. Then his books came out and I ate them up. Then he went on tour and I went to the San Diego show. He said "I can see a few male spectators. If you're here against your will, blink twice, I can help". Just so funny. The show was just like the books, but better of course.
This second book is much like the first; it's full of great stories, some of them really funny, some moving, and some merely really interesting. Rob has a great instinct for the balance between self deprecation, irony, and delivering something heartfelt and meaningful. It's right in the pocket.
If he writes another, I'm pre-ordering the minute I can. Highly recommended.

The drum kit has provided the pulse of popular music from before the dawn of jazz up to the present day pop charts. Kick It, a provocative social history of the instrument, looks closely at key innovators in the development of the drum kit: inventors and manufacturers like the Ludwig and Zildjian dynasties, jazz icons like Gene Krupa and Max Roach, rock stars from Ringo Starr to Keith Moon, and popular artists who haven't always got their dues as drummers, such as Karen Carpenter and J Dilla.

I really enjoyed this. I'm a drummer myself and I'd recommend this to any drummer who wants to know more about the origins of her instrument. The very early history of the precursors of what would one day become drums as we know them, was totally unknown to me.
The recent information was partially known to me, but presented with a new angle.
I found it interesting!

It's a bit dated, but still good, and a few places it has that classic Crichton dread impact. I recommend it. I like all of his books, especially the early ones where you can see how he practices what is to become a one-man suspense death star writer.

I won't reveal many details of the story as I don't want to spoil it for anybody. This is a classic, "amazing operator and his friends try to prevent a team of almost as amazing, and very evil, operators, from starting WWIII" story.
What made me keep reading was the tension introduced by a sci-fi-ish twist in the story. It made the whole thing seem a bit fresher.
If you're looking for Le Carre level writing, may I suggest Alan Furst?

Since his death ten years ago, Lou Reed’s living presence has only grown. The great rock-poet presided over the marriage of Brill Building pop and the European avant-garde, and left American culture transfigured. In Lou Reed: The King of New York, Will Hermes offers the definitive narrative of Reed’s life and legacy, dramatizing his long, brilliant, and contentious dialogue with fans, critics, fellow artists, and assorted habitués of the demimonde.

Many interesting stories and things about his life I didn't know about. A kind of uneven genius which is what I love about him. A very thorough book, not adulatory, but clearly written by someone who appreciates Lou's work. I also highly recommend Love Goes to Buildings on Fire, which I've read several times. I might read this one again too.
