Story
In one of his most enlightening works, C. S. Lewis shares his ruminations on both the form and the meaning of selected psalms. In the introduction he explains, "I write for the unlearned about things in which I am unlearned myself." Consequently, he takes on a tone of thoughtful collegiality as he writes on one of the Bible's most elusive books.

Enlightening connection and comforting insights
Reviewed: 08-13-24
Lewis saw connections that most of us miss. Here, he reminds us of how the Psalms' authors lived before Christ, but then takes us to valid Christian applications. He deals with difficulties (eg, "dash their babies against the rocks"), and explains why the traditional prayer book associates certain Psalms with Christian holidays. I've listened to this enlightening book twice, and plan to listen again!

Story
It’s 1927, and the National Park Service is in its youth when Margie, an avid naturalist, lands a coveted position alongside the park rangers living and working in the unrivaled splendor of Mount Rainier’s long shadow. But Chief Ranger Ford Brayden is still haunted by his father’s death on the mountain, and the ranger takes his work managing the park and its crowd of visitors seriously. The job of watching over an idealistic senator’s daughter with few practical survival skills seems a waste of resources.

Love the setting

This is the third Barnett book my wife and I have listened to. All were wonderful. We love the National Park setting for her stories, and love the historical setting too! Her books feature interesting characters in believable situations. My wife enjoys the romance, I'm reminded of pleasant memories from my college summers (working for Park concessions), and we both appreciate the Christian values that (though rarely a key focus) certainly play a role in the story and the characters' lives.

Story
Pride is often the true reason why we get our feelings hurt, why we feel rejection, why we won't admit to mistakes, why we want to be seen with certain people, and why we stay angry. Jesus gives us the perfect example of a powerful life lived without conceit, smugness, or arrogance. So why do we not want to admit to our pride? It is because of our pride! In The Power of Humility, R. T. Kendall challenges us to look deeply into our hearts and motives to recognize the pride and self-righteousness there.

A humble look at humility--that's quite an achievement!
Reviewed: 05-05-24
We all struggle with pride and/or it's alter ego self-deprecation. RT talks about this root sin in clear Biblical terms, illustrated with the successes and failures from his 75 years. The remedy he points to is none other than the scandal of the cross, where we all must kill our pride to accept God's gift of saving grace. Humility is a realistic look at ourselves, in the light of the Gospel. The book is not preachy, but edifying and encouraging. Every Christian should listen to this book.

Great story for those who love our National Parks!

Having worked in Yellowstone one summer during college, this brought back happy memories. As an added bonus, I had a relative in the CCC. The author beautifully wove together the Park's natural beauty and the lives of the young people who make the Parks a Wonderland for so many guests. Add danger and suspense around mysterious fires, and summer romances, and it was a pleasant tale to listen to (read by a talented reader). I'm looking forward to the next book by Karen Barnett!
