About this listen
It’s 1927, and the National Park Service is in its youth when Margie, an avid naturalist, lands a coveted position alongside the park rangers living and working in the unrivaled splendor of Mount Rainier’s long shadow.
But Chief Ranger Ford Brayden is still haunted by his father’s death on the mountain, and the ranger takes his work managing the park and its crowd of visitors seriously. The job of watching over an idealistic senator’s daughter with few practical survival skills seems a waste of resources.
When Margie’s former fiancé sets his mind on developing the Paradise Inn and its surroundings into a tourist playground, the plans might put more than the park’s pristine beauty in danger. What will Margie and Ford sacrifice to preserve the splendor and simplicity of the wilderness they both love?

Story
In 1931, the creation of the new Great Smoky Mountains National Park threatens Rosie McCauley’s home. Rosie vows the only way the commission will get her land is if they haul her off in a pine box. When a compromise offers her and her disabled sister the opportunity to stay for Rosie’s lifetime, her acceptance sets her apart from the other mountain folk. And the bond she’s forming with ornithologist and outsider Benton Fuller only broadens the rift. Eighty-five years later, Kieran heads back to the national park to find answers to her great-grandmother’s mysterious death.

The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Love the setting
This is the third Barnett book my wife and I have listened to. All were wonderful. We love the National Park setting for her stories, and love the historical setting too! Her books feature interesting characters in believable situations. My wife enjoys the romance, I'm reminded of pleasant memories from my college summers (working for Park concessions), and we both appreciate the Christian values that (though rarely a key focus) certainly play a role in the story and the characters' lives.

Mount Rainier 1927
The God on the Mountain Top is still God in the Valley. This first in the Vintage National Park series sets the pace for the others to come. Margie Lane may be the daughter of a U.S. Senator, but first and foremost, she is a Christian. Drawn to Mount Rainier to experience the beauty of God’s creation, she battles Chief Ranger Ford Brayden, who has questioned his own belief in God since his father was killed on the mountain two years earlier. In classic “Good versus Evil” style, Margie’s demons follow her to Mount Rainier, while Ranger Brayden continues to battle his own internal ones. The beauty of the mountain and the voice of the shepherd, little by little prevails, however. Margie finds her footing on the mountain and discovers her gift of giving lectures to the guests at the hotel about the plants and flowers growing in the wilderness. Ford Brayden begins to appreciate Margie’s talents and bravery on the mountain. With Margie’s former fiancée threatening to ruin her newfound happiness on the mountain, Margie and Ford try to foil his attempts. Margie’s father’s reputation is also at risk. With both Margie and Ford facing their worst fears, they go forward. The story culminates in unexpected ways. Excellent resolution and ending!
