Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett faces two different kinds of raging beasts—one animal, one human—in this riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestseller C. J. Box. A rogue grizzly bear has gone on a rampage—killing, among others, the potential fiancé of Joe’s daughter. At the same time, Dallas Cates, whom Joe helped lock up years ago, is released from prison with a special list tattooed on his skin. He wants revenge on the people who sent him away: the six people he blames for the deaths of his entire family and the loss of his reputation and property.

The Plot
Reviewed: 07-03-24
My husband and I are big CJ Box fans. I think we have listened to every one. We listen in the car when we travel. This new book did not disappoint and of course left us wanting to know more.
One thing that drives me crazy is the constant “Joe said”. It is an insult to the reader. CJ needs to consider leaving that out. I listen to hundreds of books and the narrator never needs to distinguish who is speaking. I hope he listens, I will keep listening but I cringe every time he has to tell us who is speaking.

I grew up in Utah and the southern Utah red desert was always my sacred escape. I would disappear for days, with Ed Abbey as my companion. I married a man from Wisconsin and he moved from Grand Teton to Moab with the park service. We played with our dogs in the washes and wild lands. I am now 79 years old. This book took me right back there. I have now seen it all through Briana’s eyes and it was such a gift of memory.

I have been a great fan of John O’Donohue, and I had a feeling I needed this book. My husband has esophageal cancer, and has had other health issues for two years. I have never experienced anything like what we are going through and this book was like a balm. His pure, gentle wisdom has given me so much and although I listened to the audio book, I have ordered the hardback and know I will wear it out, referring to it often. The narration was excellent and Pat’s voice was like a lullaby for me. Thank you - this will be my bible.
