Story
As early as Primary, you may have absorbed this confusing message: "God loves us....but He's so disappointed in you". For a religion that preaches hope, the message of "do more" often seems to win out. With so many programs, assignments, callings, commandments, standards, and honor codes, how can you keep up? The adversary highlights the shame you feel when you constantly fall short. Do you feel only heaviness as you consider the Latter-Day Saint path to exaltation? How can God not be disappointed in someone like me?

I loved his explanation of grace, we need to express our love and need to give it to others, without connecting it to performance, like Heavenly Father does, with us.

Story
The ritual murder of a prostitute named Ada McKinley in a bedroom on decrepit Pentecost Alley would ordinarily occasion no stir in Victoria's great metropolis. But under the victim's body the police find a Hellfire Club badge inscribed with the name Finlay Fitzjames - a name that instantly draws Superintendent Thomas Pitt into the case. Finlay's father - immensely wealthy, powerful, and dangerous - refuses to consider the possibility that his son has been in Ada McKinley's bed.

The Best Plot Ever!
Reviewed: 05-09-22
Some don't care for the detail that Anne Perry writes with, but I'm not one of them. For the true armchair sleuth, she let's us inside the head of Charotte and William Pitt, and even Eleanor, but we see the clues as they see them. This book in particular had so many twists and turns that even when you think you know who did it, you don't know enough until the end. What an amazing writer. The nuances of her characters both big and small make this a psychological mystery tour de force.

Though they are considered outcasts by most of their classmates, Jess and Hannah are determined to learn what they can to fulfill their responsibility to the many ghosts that haunt them. But danger, it seems, has followed them as closely as a shadow to their new home.

Fun and entertaining ghost story

I will continue with this series. I could do without some of the language, especially the f-bombs. I would have recommended this to my granddaughters (and yes, I know they hear it all day at school) but believe it or not we dont all talk like this.
The narrator would lose the thread of who was speaking and lapse in the accent, though she was skilled at all the British ones. It can make it hard to keep track of who was speaking.
The complex world is well described and I like the characters.

When a maid in the upper class Ellison household is strangled, Inspector Pitt is called in to investigate. He finds a world ruled by strict manners and social customs, where the inhabitants of the Ellison's neighborhood appear to be more outraged by the thought of scandal than they are by murder. Inspector Pitt finds a most unlikely ally in Charlotte, the Ellison's spirited daughter. But as the murders continue, Charlotte and Pitt find themselves drawn together by more than the investigation.

I loved this book. Not only was it a great mystery and a love story, but so much more. Through character and plot it develops a critique on Victorian moral sensibility which is suffused with hypocritical self-righteousness. Additionally it displays a pseudo religious morality based on rigid classcism and appearances, not love.
If this puts some off as being too high row, it's full of witty remarks and funny scenes that were hilarious and lightened the story considerably. Though I guessed the likely killer earlier than I like, the story had so many interesting elements I didnt mind.
The main character of Charlotte, the main character, is the lens through which we see the action. Her forthright honesty which in her family is viewed as a character flaw, gives her family the shakeup it needs to put them on a new course to genuine love and authenticity.

Excellent ideas in this book. But, the narrator spoke like a robot. Incredibly grating. She sounded like she couldn't understand what the words meant so she just decided on a pattern of up and down in her vocal inflections. However, the material had some great and useful tips, I hung in there. But I read the kindle version whenever possible.
