About this listen

Living on her family’s gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, clever, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented 14 year old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure....

One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their broken hearts.

Nearly 60 years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now 80 years old and living in London. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbours a suspicion as to the culprit.

Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate - now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone... yet more present than ever.

A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is spellbinding and satisfying.

This book is fabulous.! It keeps you guessing until the very end! The narration is a 5 star performance. Now I am really sad it is finished.

Perfect Mystery

Rather long and I had some difficulty getting in to it at first, but it turned out to be very interesting with a number of surprises along the way.

I got lost in the story. Good character development and author painted pictures with her words. I’m going to go back and read all her others now.

Well written and terrific twists

What made the experience of listening to The Lake House the most enjoyable?

Very interesting all the way through. But it was the twists and turns that were the best part of the story. I thought I knew where the author was going at several points, but I was wrong. The ending and wrap up turned out better than I could have imagined.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Most definitely! It was like a jewelry box that I could not open the individual draws fast enough to find each new lovely jewel.

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed very much

It took a little time for the narrator to grow on me but she eventually did.
I am glad to have chosen to finish this story, but it isn't quite worth 5 stars. it was predictable at times and highly unbelievable at others. A little far-fetched, but still a good story!

Good, but unbelievable story

Old family mystery

It took me a bit to get into this book and the various characters, but when I did, it was difficult to stop. I found the plot very interesting. The reading performance is very good and made the story an enjoyable ride. Since I listen in my car, I often found myself taking the long way to my destination just to be able to listen a bit longer. Highly recommended.

Great storyline!

It started off slowly but gradually grabbed my attention. Some of the plot turns were predictable but the whole was quite satisfying.

Modern day Dickens tale

I couldn't put this book down. I listened to it whenever I could and even got my 10 yr old daughter upset at me for being "plugged in too much." I liked this book as much as the Secret Keeper. Both are now my favorite books of Kate Morton.

Fabulous Book, and very well read!
