Publisher's summary

Living on her family’s gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, clever, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented 14 year old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure....

One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their broken hearts.

Nearly 60 years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now 80 years old and living in London. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbours a suspicion as to the culprit.

Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate - now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone... yet more present than ever.

A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is spellbinding and satisfying.

Do Not start this book !!

What made the experience of listening to The Lake House the most enjoyable?

Do not start this book unless you have time to finish to finish it, because it flows like a beautiful melody. Her use of language is extremely engaging and you will resent any interruption in your reading or listening. I would strongly recommend getting the audible edition as the person narrating the book does an incredible job and is certainly an asset to the experience.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lake House?

When Peter goes into Alice's writing room!

Have you listened to any of Caroline Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Caroline Lee so compliments the experience of the book that I would be hard put to to say just get the book and read it because as she is so descriptive, I can close my eyes and the book unfolds as if you are watching it on screen.

If you could rename The Lake House, what would you call it?

would not change anything.

Any additional comments?

Well worth the time and money.

The Lake House

All I can say is WOW! Some reviewers said the story was rambling and that the Australian narrator was inappropriate for a story based in Cornwall, but I found the story itself captivating. There are so many layers and twists and turns throughout the book, I couldn't stop listening. I liked that it was really long compared to most audiobooks, and that's what made me buy it in spite of a few poor reviews. I'm glad I did. The fact that it jumped back and forth through various time periods made it interesting and as I listened I googled old photos and fashion from the different eras so I could picture it all better. I loved everything about this book and the narrator didn't ruin the book for me one bit. I recommend this audiobook to anyone.

I found myself just frozen, listening

Km is Such AN Excellent AuthorThis ONE OF her BesT But I PROBABLY said that about all of her books! Does it Stretch The imagination? Yes, but so what? It is a fiction novel full of love, angst, humor, sadness, and mystery. I loved the way the story was told from from all of the characters perspectives over a 70 year period.. I was driving with a goofy smile on my face when the baby's story was being told. I found myself wondering if the author has a 15 y.o. daughter, she totally nailed the self absorbtion, romantic, disdainful, yet lovable personality of a teen on the brink of womanhood. I
The narrator was excellent, she seamlessly went from an upper crust accent, to cockney. Each person had a different voice, and I could visualize the characters as she read. Highly recommend this book!

Took a chance and won

If you could sum up The Lake House in three words, what would they be?

Captures your attention.

What did you like best about this story?

The story moves through several time periods and the plot is intricate and well thought out. Was a bit disappointed at the ending...wrapped up a bit too neatly...but still enjoyed the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is too long for that but I did lose some sleep over it. Couldn't stop listening.

Any additional comments?

I put the rest of the author's books that I found availableI in my wishlist.

Much better than expected

I will listen to just about anything narrated by Carolyn Lee. I was expecting the story to be just good but was very pleasantly surprised.
Just when I thought I knew the answers another twist.

complex particles woven masterfully together

Compelling mystery novel pulling complex family strands together in the 1930s and early 2000s. Great character development. Loved it. But you do have to pay attention.

Slow burn--worth the time

I started this book multiple times and it did not grab me.
I decided to be patient and let the story develop and I'm glad I finally did.
The story jumps from past to present, each time revealing new parts of the characters and events.

By mid-way through I did not want to stop listening and loved it through to then end.
