A truly enjoyable story

Had a little bit of everything in it, likable characters, appropriate comedy, some supernatural/dark elements. I found it a perfect mix and a pallet cleanser to some of the heavier darker reading I recently did.

Unfortunately, the constant emotional betrayal in this story finally got to me as well the constant loss of characters I'd grown to enjoy. The rhythm got pretty predictable. Good stuff happens followed by tragedy and betrayal over and over.

The enemy unknowingly opened a portal to the Netherworld, and our world’s only wizard somehow managed to close it. Unfortunately, something got through. Something big. A dragon. Now Kaz Wolfe, with help from his dog Duke who is channeling the spirit of a wizard from ancient Babylon, and with no help from Azib the Cowardly Genie, must find the dragon before someone gets a cellphone video of the thing, and the world learns that magic is real. Or, you know, before the dragon eats someone.

I usually don't pre-order titles, however as soon as I saw this offered I put my credit down. I wasn't disappointed, I've already pre-ordered the third entry! I love the characters in this book. However I will mention that at times the cat sounds a bit like AL Pacino, that being said I love the attitude the narrator brings to the cat regardless :)

Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

For me I enjoy getting some back story to some of the events going on in this series. I imagine these were probably cut from the regular novels as they would have made them way too long or may have slowed down the main story too much, maybe not. Either way a credit well spent in my opinion.

Didn't realize this wasn't a new book till I started noticing that there was no mention of cell phones and they used pay phones, no mention of the internet and they where still using "modem couplers" for data transmission. Then I went back and saw it was written in 1987. It didn't take away from the story, I enjoyed the premise, the story and the ending. I went and looked if they had ever made a movie out of it, however the trailer looked to be far from the book (sigh). To bad they didn't stay closer to the authors vision.

Story
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

I picked this up as a free November pick for subscribers, wouldn't be something I'd normally look for, I figured it was going to be a mystery, and although it does have questions the author is looking for answers to, it also pulls you into the story, letting you experience the journey. I was totally surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it. An excellent listen in my opinion. One of the reasons I like the free picks, it allows me to listen to things I normally wouldn't try. I found this Audible book to be a real gem!

Garth Sullis = reminds me of Darth Vader. Tri-fighters sounds like Tie Fighters etc. I still enjoyed the story, but if someone starts deflecting blaster fire with a “Laser Sword”, I may have to drop the series.
