About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Craig Alanson comes a thrilling new series that melds action-packed urban fantasy with his signature humor, read by none other than award-winning narrator R.C. Bray.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet.

I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why?

I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know. I don’t have a wand or a sword, and I don’t ride a dragon. I carry a Glock, and drive around in a beat-up RV with a talking dog.

Yeah. The talking dog was a surprise to me, too. Duke is inhabited by the spirit of a 3,000-year-old wizard from Babylon, and he’s a good dog, but he is still a dog, and that’s a problem. Like, he still thinks squirrels are his mortal enemy. And that I don’t feed him enough. How did the spirit of a wizard reach across millennia, to our time? I don’t know.

The truth is, I’m not much of a wizard, because there’s not much magic in the world for me to work with. But there used to be magic. And magic is coming back as our world converges with the Nether.

Unless I can stop it.

Loving this

Ok well I’ll admit the name had me a bit biased. However this story is very enjoyable and just because they are out to get you doesn’t mean your not paranoid.

Give this a shot you will really enjoy it.

Like!

This story was definitely foundational, and was at times tedious with the details, but I guess I am now I prepared for the next installment.

As for the story, it has just scratched the surface of what events are and will be happening, so I am going to reserve judgment until the next in the series.

The addition of a talking dog definitely adds the sidekick humor I have come to expect from Allanson..Duke is nothing like Skippy so there is no confusion or comparison there, and he definitely adds that extra dry comic relief that every good syfi story needs.

I like Craig Allanson's writing and quirky humor so I don't think I can go wrong with this series...

Overall, This is a good start to what I hope will fill the void now that Expeditionary Force has concluded.. 😁
I just hope the time between installments isn't years....

The narration is excellent, as always. RC Bray never disappoints.

Quirky entertaining

Another home run series. I am enjoying the characters and the storyline. As always, R.C.Bray brings the story to life. I cannot wait for the next installment.

Very very good

I loved the X force series and the Mavericks series. But this by far has been my favorite book. My only question is, when is the next one coming out?

Damn good story

For an ahole, egotistical, beer can, he can sure tell a good story. I eagerly await another book.

Meh! Not bad, but not ExForce quality either.

As someone who has been a true fan of the entire Expeditionary Force / Maverick’s book series, I was really looking forward to Craig Alanson’s new series. I made it through the entire book in a single day, but felt somewhat disappointed, in the end. Despite the always fantastic narration by R.C.Bray, the book itself, lacked the mix of drama and humor that made the ExForce series so enjoyable. Yes, there is some humor, just not anything near the level of Craig’s prior Novels.

I realize that this book serves as the foundation of a new series “world” and that it must dedicate a large portion of the novel to creating the groundwork for the rest of the series. I just recall that with Columbus Day, Alanson was able to introduce Skippy, and some unending humor, about halfway through the novel.

With bits of light humor scattered throughout the book, Convergence introduces what appears to be the Skippy of this series, an ancient gin, who “Caz”, the main protagonist nicknames “Abzib,”around the last 20% of the book. I felt a sense of Déjà vu, when abzib talks down to Caz, by explaining something to him “Barney Style!”

Hopefully, with the characters introduced, the stage set, and the main plot laid out, the second book will permit Alanson the freedom to write more of the great fiction that I and his other fans have truly enjoyed. In the mean time, I await the final chapter in the ExForce Series.

Awesome new series!

if you like the humor and pace (and the same badass narrator of course) of Expeditionary Force but are hungry for a bit of urban fantasy... this is definitely your jam! I enjoyed getting to know the new characters (the best of which is a dog/wizard) and look forward to seeing this series develop as well as Alanson's other books.

a great listen

A new fresh take on a wizard story. Solid characters and writing. R.C. Bray gives a good performance that sounds like him and different from ExForce.
