Alex Sand was spending the evening at home playing basketball with his two young sons when all three were shot in cold blood. A wealthy federal judge, there’s no short list of people who could have a vendetta against Sands, but the gruesome murders, especially that of his children, turn their St. Paul community on its head. Sand was on the verge of a major donation to a local housing charity, Heart/Twin Cities, and with the money in limbo, eyes suddenly turn to his grieving widow, Margaret Cooper, to see what she might do with the money.

Liked the Book, Liked the Reader
Reviewed: 11-09-23
I have been reading reviews, and I have to assume that many readers didn't get the message that Mr. Ferrone passed away. I thought that Robert Petkoff's reading was fine. No complaints. The story was a little slow, and I was unhappy with the ending, but overall, a pleasant experience. Sequel maybe?

Another Winner!

I really liked this book. The character of Holly is engaging, the story is interesting, and the reader is good. I was intrigued to notice that SK used Holly's OCD to drive the action. The ending was no surprise - I was able to guess how the book would end well before it did, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

I have read every John Sandford book and enjoyed all of them - except this one. I read John Sandford books because I love the action and fast pace. I am on Chapter 8, and so far, nothing has really happened. I will probably return it unfinished.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

I Loved Everything But The Ending
Reviewed: 09-29-22
I loved this book until the climax and the end, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. The story was imaginative and interesting. I cared about the characters and what happened to them. I usually listen in my car, and on several occasions had to sit in my car in the garage listening to the book until I got to a part where I thought I could live without knowing what happened next. I wish I could give six stars to Seth Numrich. His narration was outstanding.

Story
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

It's a good story, but a little long-winded, in that I am not a fan of philosophical discussion or introspection. I enjoyed Eli Wallach's narration when I could hear it over the annoying, ear-grating music.

The story was a little long, not a lot of action. I frequently found my mind wandering and had to rewind to see if I missed anything. The narrator isn't bad, but he mispronounced words (nuclear, escape, deus ex machina, etc.), which annoyed me.

I really wanted to like this book. The first book was intriguing, the second was entertaining, but this one drags along with too little action. I frequently found my mind wandering and had to go back to see if I missed anything. Unfortunately, I rarely did. I was also disappointed in the fate of Richard Farris. It didn't seem to fit the tone of the books. A lot of books these days seem to have political opinions interspersed with the story, and I am pretty good at ignoring them, whether I agree or not, so the political overtones did not affect my review.

I listened to this book based on the great reviews, but I was disappointed. I found my mind wandering many times while listening, and then having to go back to see if I missed anything important. This could have been a good story, but it seemed to contain a lot of stuff that was unimportant to the story and just thrown in.

Too Much Preaching About Dogs
Reviewed: 10-15-21
I really wanted to like this book; however, I just didn't. The author goes on and on ad nauseum about the greatness of dogs. OK, I get it. Dogs are great. Dogs are better than humans. How about some action? I listen at work and could answer the phone or leave the office for a few minutes and still catch the end of a speech about dogs. I did like the narration. I have listened to books read by Mr. Ballerini in the past, and he always does a great job.

Am I the only reader who is tired of Constance Green? This series used to be about Agent Pendergast; however, in the last few books, he has become somewhat of an afterthought. The plot is ridiculous, the characters unsympathetic and the narration is terrible. Please please bring back Aloysius Pendergast. I sure do miss him.
