Publisher's summary

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

From Dean Koontz, the master of suspense, comes an epic thriller about a terrifying killer and the singular compassion it will take to defeat him.

“Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic.” - Associated Press

Woody Bookman hasn’t spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

A uniquely gifted dog with a heart as golden as his breed, Kipp is devoted beyond reason to people. When he hears the boy who communicates like he does, without speaking, Kipp knows he needs to find him before it’s too late.

Woody’s fearful suspicions are taking shape. A man driven by a malicious evil has set a depraved plan into motion. And he’s coming after Woody and his mother. The reasons are primal. His powers are growing. And he’s not alone. Only a force greater than evil can stop what’s coming next.

Critic reviews

"Readers who were wondering how Koontz could possibly follow up his remarkable Jane Hawk series can breathe a sigh of relief. His new novel finds him still at the top of his game…Scary, sickening (in that good way), and touching, this is a novel that will delight both the author's legion of fans and those who finally decide it's time to find out what this guy Koontz is all about." Booklist (starred review)

"Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic." —Associated Press

"A warm, deeply engrossing tale…Not to be missed." Providence Journal

Editor's Pick

It’s not always about what you say…
"It’s also about who’s listening. Packed with a winding story plot and an unforgettable performance by Audie Award-winning narrator, Edoardo Ballerini, Devoted has quickly become a new favorite of mine. Thriller mastermind Dean Koontz tells the suspenseful story of 11-year-old Woody Bookman, a young boy with autism and selective mutism who is actually not as silent as everyone around him may think. Kipp can hear Woody loud and clear, but Kipp just happens to be a dog. Woody always suspected there was something nefarious at play in the mysterious death of his father, but had no one to tell and no proof. Now, the same evil forces seem to have returned to finish off his family for good, and Woody must rely on the help of his faithful golden retriever, Kipp, to protect him and his mother."—Nicole R., Audible Editor

Excellent Narration, Mediocre Story

Edoardo Ballerini is an excellent narrator, and he makes any book better. I am a long-time fan of Dean Koontz, but this was a little too sappy and preachy for me. I love the idea of highly-intelligent dogs and the "feel goods" that go along with all of that. Having it wrapped up in a story about evil people is very entertaining. I'm familiar with the tone of his books, but this one was just a little too much for me. I recommend this if you're looking for something semi-light with evil v. good and really smart, brave, and loyal dogs. If you want something darker with more substance, this probably isn't the book for you.

Rehash of old material

Seems not too different from watchers, that being said, I still enjoyed the book, but was a bit disappointed.

Wow this was super good, I had a hard time putting it down. Dean Koontz is a hit and miss for me, but he definitely hit this one out of the park!

good story

but too much detail, which was not needed, and narrator did not help, his voice was mostly flat-line.

I really wanted to love it

I really wanted to love this book. Parts of it were real good and other parts not so much. The ending and many other key milestones seemed rushed and had thin explanations.
