About this listen

INSTANT number one New York Times best seller: Agent Pendergast faces his most unexpected challenge yet when bloodless bodies begin to appear in Savannah, GA.

A fabulous heist:
On the evening of November 24, 1971, D. B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305—Portland to Seattle—with a fake bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and then parachuted from the rear of the plane, disappearing into the night...and into history.

A brutal crime steeped in legend and malevolence:
Fifty years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins—sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.

A case like no other:
As the mystery rises along with the body count, Pendergast and his partner, Agent Coldmoon, race to understand how—or if—these murders are connected to the only unsolved skyjacking in American history. Together, they uncover not just the answer...but an unearthly evil beyond all imagining.

Audio/ modulation of volume is horrible; story is entertaining.

Perhaps I just miss the performances of the late Rene Auberjonois. The reading and performance are not the main issue; its that when soto voce ie used , unlike in prior performances of Pendergast novels, in this one I frequently had to rewind and adjust the volume significantly, only to reverse seconds latr. Makes for a maddening experience, esp. since the good Special Agent frequently speaks softly.
Also, Constance Green sounds like the late Katherine Hepburn in this performance. Not sure that’s fair to either .

Bring back Scott Brick!!

Scott and Rene Auberjonois were the best voices for this series. I loved Rene's voice, was so sad when I heard he passed away. He took over from Scott, and, I think, did a great job of picking up what Scott had done with the characters ' voices.

The last two narrators failed in that regard...and the guy who narrated this book, did a great injustice to the voice of Constance. He had her sounding like a screeching old hag. All his characters otherwise sounded pretty much the same, with the exception of a few who sounded like cheap knockoffs of Hollywood stars, such as Jack Nicholson.

good story poor performance

Good story, though perhaps a bit short. Reminded me of Relic, in some ways, but less descriptive and without in depth characterization. The narration was bad. Pendergast and Coldmoon voices were ok, but Constance Green sounded like Catherine Hepburn making a Pepperidge Farm's commercial. And the narrators vocal style starts each sentence strongly and trails off to a mumble. he can read, and with direction the performance may have been good, but we will never know. fix this before the next novel, which it seems will return us to late nineteenth century NY, which has me excited.

Constance’s voice

The book itself was very good, but I can’t figure out why the narrator made Constance sound like a cranky old woman. I originally thought that despite having a pleasant voice he just sucked at female voices, but he did a good job with the other females in the book. This makes me think it was a deliberate decision. Maybe he didn’t like the character?

My favorite Pendergast story; worst narration

As far as the storyline goes, out of the 20 books, this is absolutely my favorite. I loved the story from beginning to end.

I understand that Mr. Auberjonois is gone. But after 20 books, the new narrator does NOT need to "make it his own" ... he needs to listen to several of the other books and TRY TO CONFORM to what the listeners know. The voice of Constance was so irritating, I almost returned the book. I thought Bette Davis, but maybe it was a wobbly Katherine Hepburn who yelled everything. As for the rest? All the voices sounded the same to me. And he yelled so many of the conversations where it didn't seem yelling was necessary. Not just Constance. He yelled alot. Please don't use this narrator again. Scott Brick has always been one of my favorite narrators, as is Ray Porter.

And the sound effects? We don't need sound effects. Please, no more sound effects. I'm not in the 3rd grade.

Very very sad review for such a wonderful book. This is one that I would have listened to over and over. Sadly, I can't.

Need a better narrator

We have been spoiled by the late great Rene Auberjonois, irreplaceable to find such a talented voice, but try the authors must..

As usual wonderful book

Of note the new narrator has done an amazing job. I know that the shoes of René Auberjonois we’re huge to fill as he was Aloysius Pendergast. Mr. Auberjonois will be missed as a wonderful narrator. Mr. McDermott has done a fine job and I hope we will continue to hear his melodious voice in the near future of other Pendergast novels
