About this listen

INSTANT number one New York Times best seller: Agent Pendergast faces his most unexpected challenge yet when bloodless bodies begin to appear in Savannah, GA.

A fabulous heist:
On the evening of November 24, 1971, D. B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305—Portland to Seattle—with a fake bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and then parachuted from the rear of the plane, disappearing into the night...and into history.

A brutal crime steeped in legend and malevolence:
Fifty years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins—sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.

A case like no other:
As the mystery rises along with the body count, Pendergast and his partner, Agent Coldmoon, race to understand how—or if—these murders are connected to the only unsolved skyjacking in American history. Together, they uncover not just the answer...but an unearthly evil beyond all imagining.

I hate this narration!!

One of my absolute favorite series of all time and I was so looking forward to this book and I’m not sure I can even finish it. I can’t believe they released this audio book with this narrator. It’s probably the worst narration of any book I’ve ever listened to.

Disappointed 😞

I am a huge fan of the Pendergast series and breathlessly awaited this new installment. I have to say, while I appreciated the work of the narrator, was yanked out of the story every time he spoke in Constance’s voice. While she is old in years, she presents as a woman in her 20’s. He makes her sound like she’s eighty! She even sounds older than Ms. Frost. This broke the story for me every time I heard it.

Additionally, the plot line rather “jumped the shark” for me. I love the mystery of past books, but the storyline goes way past my ability to suspend my disbelief. So sorry. Hope the next one is better and they use the narrator used in the past.

book is great so far, narration is terrible.

I completely agree with my fellow reviewers that the narration kills this book. I knew that Rene Auberjonios couldn't live forever, even though he was the perfect narrator for the Pendergast series. But I thought they had time to come up with another narrator as good. They have not been shy about having 1-book narrators in the past and they will move on for the next book. I'm going to give this one back and read it on kindle, at least I can imagine better more realistic voices in my head.

Bring back Scott Brick!

The story is very good, as usual. The narration really lets it down. Constance Greene sounds like she's 90 with a very harsh accent, rather than the refined voice she should have. Greene and Frost sound the same, making it difficult to know which one is speaking during dialogue. Pendergast does not have his honeyed, upper-class accent. Most characters sound alike. The rest is just someone reading a book.

Very good story but poor narration

I know use of different narrators is a necessity with a series as long as this one but William DeMeritt did a poor job his first time out. He needs a lot of practice doing female voices or should maybe consider only narrating novels with male characters. His Constance Green was abysmal and she sounded more like an old man. Why he wasn't required to listen to Jefferson Mays' excellent performance in Crooked River of Constance and at least try to come close to it is beyond me. Finally, he needs to work on his voice modulation because he really overdid the volume level of certain characters in many places. It was almost as if he thought shouting would make up for a poor performance.

I enjoyed the story even though some of the plot was a bit over the top even for a Pendergast novel. I'm a huge fan of this character and series and hope a better narrator will be used for the next one.

Flawed Narration Diminishes The Book

Like most Pendergast fans, I eagerly awaited this book. I enjoy audiobooks on my commute and believe that the narrator can be a compelling part of the audiobook. Unfortunately, this narration was among the worst in my 500+ audiobook library.

I have never before had to have my hand on the volume control while listening to an audiobook. With this book, the volume was often too faint or too loud to enjoy listening. Also, I thought the accents that were imparted were quite amateurish.

I made it through the book but will likely not buy another audiobook with this narrator.

Captivating story - Annoying Narration

I agree with most of the negative reviews regarding problems with the narration. However, I was able to get past all but one. Whenever Constance spoke I was totally distracted and could only think- That is not Constance! - That said, the writing is brilliant, the story completely engaged me and I really enjoyed the book. Many thanks to the authors. Next time please find another narrator.

I will skip anything narrated by DeMeritt

The story is classic Pendergast. The narrator, however, well..........I'd read the negative reviews on him, but got it for a road trip anyway. On the sample, he seemed fine. The most minor complaint I have is that he makes Constance Green sound like an old harpy. The worst is that a large part of his narration is fast and his volume dwindles until it's at least extremely difficult if not impossible to understand him. It's as if he neglected to take a breath between phrases or sentences and is rushing to finish before he runs out of breath. Then he'll be practically yelling. I had to drive with one hand on the volume control, constantly turning it up & down, but still missed large portions. Listening to it at home, his voice still dwindled to an unintelligible whisper, then rose to speaker vibrating volume.

Poor reading

Reader speaks in such a low register you can hardly hear and drops volume for effect, but you constantly straining to hear; he does southern accidents that are unintelligible

Love Preston:Child but need a new reader

Not a Fan

I was disappointed with this story. It was a back and forth of too many things going on. I didn't like the voice the narrator used for Constance and Coldmoon was very annoying throughout the book. I feel they have lost the magic of Penderghast.
