Story
It’s the early 1990s in Glasgow, Scotland, and Stephen has emerged from a lengthy hospital stay. Diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, a little-understood disease which has robbed him of any prospects of work, friends, or independent living, he moves slowly toward new goals and meets others like him, including Richard, a friend from school, and Carrie, a young woman bedridden for five years. Feeling isolated and alone, they form their own support group, and try to get by with as little money and pain as possible.

I've been a Belle and Sebastian fan for coming up on 20 years. it was really cool listening to Stuart's book and hearing him read it. it does start off a touch slow, but it really draws you in in a very Charming way.

I read a lot of crime fiction and this holds up pretty well. a bit corny in places and it seems to really hit you over the head with the celebrity characters. I can't tell if the ending was super predictable from really early on or if I've just been ruined by too many crime books.

awful narrator
Reviewed: 04-08-24
I love Robert Frost and the poems are all phenomenal, but the narrator is absolutely terrible. I would say she sounds like a robot, but I honestly think AI would do more Justice to these poems. she sounds like a third grader just trying to get through the poems so the teacher will pick someone else to read. her inflection and emphasis are completely off and just overall insulting to these great works

Story
This is the 1927 book that years later inspired the movie of the same name. It is a book about criminal violence, corrupt politics and police, and illicit sex. The City of New York, from the late colonial period up to the early twentieth century, was a bustling hub of commerce, industry, and immigration. For many the city was the gateway to a new life in America, and for many others it was a place to steal a buck from their fellow New Yorkers and visitors to the city with thievery, fraud, and vice—in neighborhoods such as the Five Points, the Bowery, Hells Kitchen, and the Water Front.

I've been looking forward to this book finally getting an audio performance for years. the book itself is great and definitely very interesting. the narrator is a bit lackluster though. very monotone and fairly boring to listen to. overall I'd recommend it, but maybe listen at 1.05 X speed

maybe it's because I've read a lot of detective and crime fiction but it felt like there were far too many obvious Clues in this book that kind of ruined the suspense aspect. overall it was a fairly enjoyable read though

Story
Before the movie, this is the novel that gave life to Hawkeye Pierce, Trapper John, Hot Lips Houlihan, Frank Burns, Radar O'Reilly, and the rest of the gang that made the 4077th MASH like no other place in Korea or on earth. The doctors who worked in the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) during the Korean War were well trained but, like most soldiers sent to fight a war, too young for the job. In the words of the author, "a few flipped their lids, but most of them just raised hell, in a variety of ways and degrees."
