Story
It seems straightforward to Attorney Nate Shepherd: a middle-aged billionaire dies while celebrating at a wedding reception. The grief-stricken family lashes out, though, blaming the billionaire’s date for his death. When the family brings all of its power to bear, the wheels of local justice threaten to overwhelm the woman. As Nate Shepherd steps in to defend her, he tries to deflect the misplaced anger that’s directed at the woman for the tragedy. But as the investigation progresses, a tangled history unravels, including unexpected ties to Nate’s own life.

Slow and predictable

After Lethal Defense, this one falls short. The case is weak and the plot drags. Narrator is excellent. I’m giving this one a smile that doesn’t reach my eyes.

This is no Gold Coast
Reviewed: 05-22-18
I began reading Nelson DeMille's books with The Gold Coast. Unfortunately, that set the bar high and Plum Island just didn't reach half way to Gold Coast. Often, the narrator can make or break a book, and Christian Rummel nailed it, Scott Brick didn't with his overly dramatic performance, especially at the end with the ever-so-long sinking boat ride in the storm. That should've been about 5 minutes instead an hour. After this, realizing that Scott Brick narrates all other DeMilles, I'm going to take a break.

Story
Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

Another Soapbox Lecture From Grisham
Reviewed: 02-17-18
Any additional comments?
Instead of writing great legal thrillers, Grisham has opted to take the world on head-to-head in the second half of his career in an effort to expose the shady side of the businesses - mining, law-school financing, etc. I know he is capable of amazing writing and stories, but he's made his money and now chooses to "preach" to us about things he feels are wrong in the legal business and industries surrounding it. If I want a lecture, I go other places. When I want a legal thriller, I search for Grisham. But no more, I'm giving up. You should, too. His work is sub-par today. Cause writing - that's what I'd call it. I want my money back. Weak - you can do so much better, John! Time To Kill, The Firm, Pelican Brief - that's Grisham!!! Not this one! Move on, not worth it.

Change is afoot at Kings Lake Central police station. A most unexpected new detective inspector takes up his post this Monday morning, and the oldest detective in the place takes a momentous decision. Around them, other officers are considering their own situations, and even the building itself seems to be facing an uncertain future. But life and death go on, nevertheless, and by lunchtime someone will make a grim discovery on the Norfolk saltmarshes. A stranger seems to have suffered a slow and agonizing death out there.

She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

Too predictable, too sappy!
Reviewed: 12-25-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The love story was just not believable.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Very predictable ending will make the book just another book
What about Ellen Archer’s performance did you like?
Great tempo. Well changed tones for various characters.
Did The Chemist inspire you to do anything?
No, just an entertaining (but predictable) story
Any additional comments?
The story is laid out with too many "unbelievable" events, hideouts, stashes, that are convenient to the story but just not believable.

What did you like best about this story?
Not as predictable as most books
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
His voice was a little too lazy and slow for my taste
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions
Any additional comments?
Good wins, bad guys lose, Classic. I would order another one of his books.
