About this listen

The hair-raising suspense of The General's Daughter... the wry wit of The Gold Coast... this is vintage Nelson DeMille at the peak of his originality and the height of his powers...

Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide cop John Corey is convalescing in rural eastern Long Island when an attractive young couple he knows is found shot to death on the family patio. The victims were biologists at Plum Island, a research site rumored to be an incubator for germ warfare. Suddenly, a local double murder takes on shattering global implications - and thrusts Corey and two extraordinary women into a dangerous search for the secret of Plum Island....

Critic reviews

“DeMille's Mike Hammer-like cop is a chuckle-provoking winner, and the plot cleverly combines biological hazards and shiver-me-timbers pirate legends. An entertaining mix from the big-selling DeMille.” ( Booklist)
“Heavy wisecracking keeps the fun flowing as DeMille cranks up a thrilling, entertaining plot.” ( Kirkus Reviews)

Vintage John Corey at last

I have been checking Audible for months hoping for Plum Island to be available. Yesterday my prayers were answered and I was happily listening to the original John Corey detective story, the first of five Demille books featuring this entertaining and amazing character, within 10 minutes. Scott Brick is John Corey. Plum Island is engaging and a great listen.

narrated to perfection

Scott Brick does it again! The book is pretty good, but his performance of agent John Corey is superb. Great way to get the series going.

Favorite story

Would you consider the audio edition of Plum Island to be better than the print version?

No, but it's close

Who was your favorite character and why?

John. He's a sexist brat, but he is smart, clever and outwits the bad guys.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. This is one of his best.

Any additional comments?

This story has it all: complex plot, mystery, red herrings, interesting characters, snappy dialogue (DeMille is a master of dialogue), action, humor, and sort-of romance. I have read it numerous times and will listen to it again. This novel really is brilliant.

I enjoyed the story and characters! Many plot twists and surprise revelations. All the holes were filled by the end.

Viva John Corey

The most fun and suspenseful detective story I have listened to in a very long time. For those of you who do not like books in the first person...this one will change your mind. The book's main character, John Corey, is a sarcastic, street smart, male chauvinist pig, by his own definition (and extremely hard to kill). However, John is a much more sensitive person that he lets on, plus his instincts are tops when it comes to solving murders.

Looking forward to listening to Scott Brick narrate the second in the John Corey series.

Will have you on the edge of your seat...

Scott Brick lover's will enjoy this book. He does another phenomenal job of bringing characters to life. Nelson DeMille's plot line will have you biting your nails from the early pages. Enjoyed this one so much it kept me on the elliptical for 90 minutes at one point.

A rare perfect combination

This is a super example of the perfect combination of story, author, reader. Scott Brick is John Corey. DeMille has written a character that is believable, funny and as history shows...perfect for a series.

If you want a book to recommend to someone...particularly as an inducement to listen to more audible titles....this is it.

Engaging storyline!

John Corey character is quirky and endearng, albeit crass as times.

Narrator needs to seriously work in his voice discernment, especially the female characters
