Orphaned by the death of her grandmother and her father’s disappearance, nine-year-old Wise Child is taken in by Juniper, a healer and sorceress. Soon enough, the young girl finds herself flourishing under Juniper’s care—learning about herbal lore, and even introductory magic. But just as she begins to feel at home in the Scottish village, the girl’s mother—the black witch Maeve—returns. Forced to choose between Maeve and Juniper, Wise Child has a difficult decision to make. She could stay with Juniper, or leave with Maeve and adopt a life of luxury.

I’ve read this book at least half a dozen times over many years, and this skillful narrator brought out new aspects of the book for me. Her voices for each character are subtle and just right. I will listen to this again and again. Wonderful!

A wonderful, loving look at life in Ireland before modernity. Heart-building and heart-aching and one of the best books I’ve ever read. The reader, Dermot Crowley, is perfect on every score, infusing humor and understanding into every lilting line. Listening to this is a gift and worth revisiting again and again.

When young orphan, Oliver Twist, is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker, he leaves behind years of miserable servitude and mistreatment at an English workhouse. Hoping to move on to better things, he decides to escape his new, equally dreary surroundings and head to London. It is there that the novel unravels as Oliver meets a host of larger-than-life characters, including The Artful Dodger, a high-ranking member of a juvenile pickpocketing gang, and their elderly leader, Fagin.

Another winner in Audible’s Dickens collection. Jonathan Pryce was the right man for the book, and his performance of every character - and Fagin, especially - is masterful, and brought the story to life for me. I read it many years ago but now, having listened to this marvelous production, feel I’ve really read it at last. Thank you, Audible, for this excellent collection.

When Samuel Pickwick decides to establish and preside over a travelling society, he unknowingly brings together three of the oddest men in all of London: Tracy Tupman, the loveless self-professed ladies’ man, Augustus Snodgrass, the poet who’s never put pen to paper, and Nathaniel Winkle, the endlessly clumsy sportsman. The ‘Pickwickians’ set off in search of new adventures outside of the confines of the city. Everything about this production is first rate - Kinnear’s astonishing voice acting, Neil Gaiman’s inviting and helpful preface, the sound quality, and of course Dickens’ marvelous, funny, affecting book. I’m very grateful to Audible for many wonderful days of listening to The Pickwick Papers. I’m also grateful to other Audible listeners for their reviews which led me to select this production of the many on offer. I can only say: they were right!

Story
Ubuntu is a Xhosa word originating from a South African philosophy that encapsulates all our aspirations about how to live life well, together. It is the belief in a universal human bond: I am only because you are. And it means that if you are able to see everyone as fully human, connected to you by their humanity, you will never be able to treat others as disposable or without worth. By embracing the philosophy of ubuntu and living it out in daily life it’s possible to overcome division and be stronger together in a world where the wise build bridges, not walls.

A potent call to kindness and community. The stories told in the course of sharing the lessons of Ubuntu will both break and open your heart. Ubuntu was an entirely new concept to me, but its tenets are universal, sensible, and vital to review and renew from time to time. So glad I stumbled upon this wonderful book which has reminded me that we flourish in connection with other people and left me filled with hope. It’s also read beautifully and a pleasure to listen to.
