Will Trent is undercover at Fort Knox. His assignment: to investigate a 22-year-old murder. His suspect's name: Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher is in Fort Knox on his own mission: to bring down a dangerous criminal ring operating at the heart of America’s military. Except now Will Trent is on the scene. But there’s a bigger conspiracy at play - one that neither the special agent nor the ex-military cop could have anticipated.

disappointing-definitely not worth 1 of my credits
Reviewed: 02-27-23
I am a fan of the Jack Reacher books and the Will Trent books, but this short story didn't do justice to either character. There were many story points that didn't feel true for either man. The ending was abrupt and totally unsatisfying. I felt cheated by the whole experience of listening to this audiobook, which is a first for me. It read like some hack third-party author wanted to make a quick buck by using these two fan bases, and just threw something together. It has put me off both authors.... for now.

Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie.

I should have stopped after hearing the author read the forward, Instead I tried to find something funny in the next couple chapters. Nothing. Not one laugh. If you like fart jokes and bathroom humor, then maybe this will work for you. I'm not wasting any more of my time on it.

Story
At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

worst narrator I've ever heard
Reviewed: 03-13-18
It's almost criminal that they let this horrible narrator read this great book. I read this book years ago and would not have guessed that a narrator could make it flat and tedious. I also did not appreciate the introduction, which seemed to be more of an advertisement for other authors and books than providing any info we didn't already know about this book and author. I hope to never listen to another book narrated by Peter Ganim. His cadence and almost sing-song reading was annoying. I will look for another narrator or just read it again myself.

Story
The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

Loved this audio book. The only thing I was disappointed in is that the second book in the series is not released until 3/27/18. I didn't want to leave that world just yet. There are so many books that I rarely listen to the same one twice, but this one was worthy even though I knew the ending already. I hope the audio book is also available on the same day as the hardcopy. Looking forward to it.

stepping back into Lisbeth's world
Reviewed: 09-04-15
Simon Vance has done an amazing job of narrating this fantastic series. He helped to make me feel like I was stepping right back into Lisbeth's world. Yes, there are some differences from the first three Stieg Larsson books, but there are differences from book to book. So that didn't bother me. The first book is still my favorite in the series, and maybe I'm still in the glow of having just finished this book, but I'm thinking this fourth book is my second favorite in the series. Pretty high praise, I'd say. I'll have to go back and read 2 and 3 again to know for sure. Either way, I'm looking forward to a fifth book in the series from David Lagercrantz as the story is not over. Loved this book.

Story
Homicidal is the story of the almost 25-year serial-murder crime spree of Lonnie Franklin Jr., who is alleged to have killed at least 10 women in Los Angeles, if not more. Nicknamed by the media the Grim Sleeper, because there appeared to be a 13-year lull in the killings, Franklin met most of the women through random encounters that ended in murder. Significant blunders by the Los Angeles Police Department helped Franklin avoid arrest for years.

true crime
Reviewed: 07-27-13
This is NOT a fictional murder mystery. If you're not interested in brief descriptions of true crime serial killers from Los Angeles from decades ago, that jump from one to another to another to another, and that are very badly narrated, then skip this one. I deleted this one as it's not worth the time it took to listen to it.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life - a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school and a challenging volunteer job performing Canine Search and Rescue. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare: an encounter with the Red Scarf Killer, who shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

I will not knowingly buy another audiobook narrated by Tanya Eby. She reads like she's reciting for second graders. I was going to stop after the first chapter, but I thought maybe she would get better. She didn't.
I don't know if the narrator totally ruined the story for me or not, but in the end, I didn't care much for the writing either.

Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

a rare 5-star review from me
Reviewed: 04-08-13
Not only do I rarely give 5-star reviews for performance AND story, but I also rarely listen to an audiobook all in one day. So this was the audiobook I couldn't put down! Usually I just listen while exercising or driving and a book gets listened to over multiple days. Of course, I knew I would love Colin Firth's narration (great voice and accent), but the story and the writing talents of Greene were also compelling to listen to... or possibly Colin made it just that much more compelling. Not sure. Either way, I loved this audiobook. Now I'm back looking for more from both Colin and Greene.

Story
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Five stars for the narrator. Excellent.
I gave this audiobook four stars for the author's telling of the story. It was also well written, which I see as two slightly different things. I don't know that we were meant to actually like the story. You feel deflated and let down at the end, but then again, such is life. Probably my highest praise is that I think I'll remember this story for a long time. I have read other more exciting so-called "thrillers" that were perhaps more entertaining, but two years later I don't really remember that much about the details of the story. This one will stick with me like alternate memories of my youth.

The stories in Simon Rich's new book, The Last Girlfriend on Earth, are bizarre, funny, and yet...relatable. Rich explores love's many complications - losing it, finding it, breaking it, and making it - and turns the ordinary into the absurd. With razor-sharp humor, and just in time for Valentine's Day, the story “Eureka” takes listeners for an exhilarating, hilarious ride on the rollercoaster of love.
