First the dislike and it is a small one. The section in the book that talks about Alexander's career beginnings is one I've heard over and over so it was nothing new. BUT that being said 99% of the book is amazing. The information in this book makes me wonder why so much is left out of so many other histories.

Not only is it a great story but you can't go wrong with Simon Vance's narration. No spoilers here, just a really great trilogy.

Nobody writes like Stephen King and having him in my ear giving advice about my own writing as I'm doing it, It's like having a friend over for far too short a time.

I really loved this though admittedly the first half was a little daunting. To find the exact difference in strategic thinkers and expound on it becomes a little dry. Fortunately the back half actually started to get into the applications by different leaders. I especially found the importance of civilian doctrine married to military doctrine to be incredibly interesting.

The narration is great. The information put fourth is wonderful. The beginning of civilization is of great interest and enjoyment to me. This book has it all.

The information given is great and given well. The book comes off as somewhat apologist at times however. There is very much a sense of "yeah well the west did worse things than the Persians." There is a definite feeling that history is one-sided when it comes to the Persians and I mostly agree with that. But to paint them as a peaceful empire is a little too revisionist for me.
Sure they didn't force their own beliefs on conquered peoples but make no mistake they were conquered. The Persians violently absorbed their neighbors and we're brutal in their ability to keep there subjects in line and in Empire. Not really a peaceful way of doing things.

Where was this when I was in school? Richard Matthews is also a pleasure to listen to.

This book did not disappoint. There are several moments where I had to stop it and go back because I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

Dan opened up an entire world for me when I listened to my first hardcore history. Now I'm addicted. Seriously though, I cannot express what he and his podcast mean to me. I wish schools taught like he does.
