Story
Why do Israelis have among the world’s highest life expectancies and lowest rates of “deaths of despair” from suicide and substance abuse? Why is Israel’s population young and growing while all other wealthy democracies are aging and shrinking? How can it be that Israel, according to a United Nations ranking, is the fourth happiest nation in the world? Why do Israelis tend to look to the future with hope, optimism, and purpose while the rest of the West struggles with an epidemic of loneliness, teen depression, and social decline?

I was looking for a book that would help me understand and learn more about the country that I now live in but did not grow up in.I did some research in deciding what book would help me in this quest and by the end of the book I’ve concluded that I had made the right choice. I love, admire and appreciate my country now even more!

Story
"Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Dr. Judith Orloff. "But for empaths, it goes much further. We actually feel others' emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for empaths who want to develop coping skills in a high-stimulus world while embracing their gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.

Confirming, healing and guiding
Reviewed: 03-16-25
I resonated with what was said. It was confirming, healing and guiding. Helped me realize that people are different and it is ok to not have to be the life of the party and the most confident and popular and seemingly most well adjusted person in the room. Being extra sensitive has it’s gifts and there are tools that we can use to help us accept ourselves wholly and go on to live happy and content lives.

In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

Yeonmi’s personal account of her life in North Korea shook me to my core.

Ever since I heard Yeonmi Park speak I knew I wanted to get her book and learn more about her and her life experiences. Her story is incredibly eye-opening, painful and on the whole, inspiring. Each chapter flew by easily as I listened to her life unfold. I had never realized the extent of poverty and suffering some could experience until I had heard about her life growing up in North Korea. Her journey to freedom in all aspects of life is such an inspiration.

Story
Since September 11, 2001, the Western world has been preoccupied with Islam and its role in terrorism. Yet, public debate about the faith is polarized. One camp praises "the religion of peace", while the other claims all Muslims are terrorists. Canadian human rights activist Yasmine Mohammed believes both sides are dangerously wrong. In Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, Yasmine speaks her truth as a woman born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. Despite being a first-generation Canadian, she never felt at home in the West.

Yasmine is an inspiration!
Reviewed: 11-27-24
It was painful and shocking to hear about the abuse Yasmine had to endure from early childhood within her culture, religion and family. It was inspiring to hear how she managed to free her mind and body from the radical and extremist expectations and practices that were forced upon her. Yasmine made me realize there is an irony in free-thinking societies wherein in their effort to be inclusive of and not offensive to other cultures/ religions , they have decided to turn a blind eye and have completely no criticism or disapproval for any of the practices which often comes at the expense of children and women . not only is it tolerated but oftentimes even celebrated and encouraged. Cultural and religious practices could be tolerated and accepted to some extent but never to the extent where it abuses, breaks, and oppresses especially children. We ought to be more careful and selective about what we are tolerating within our free societies.
