What happened to the audio editing in the last book?

I’m into the third book, and I’ve been enjoying the series… but the audiobook is not it. The volume is ALL OVER THE PLACE. At first I thought my speakers were having a low battery issue or something? But it’s really just the audio. It’s almost unlistenably terrible. I gave it 3 stars because I had no complaints until the third book.

This book messed me up. The ups and downs are brutal, mostly because I love all the characters so dearly, despite their flaws. I’m not sure if I’ll read the last book because this one really rocked me. It was impossible to put down, and I don’t even remember the last time I cried this much.
As an aside: I speak French a little bit - and not at all well - but I found the French and translations throughout this book mildly irritating.

Contemplating DNF

I’m almost done with the first book, but I’m writing a review now because the issues are significant enough that I’m not sure I want to continue listening. First off, the FMC is weirdly judgmental and remarkably stupid. She’s honestly almost intolerable. Second, the sex scenes are mostly hot, but sometimes the dirty talk and descriptions are unbearably cringy because of word choice/phrasing. For example, “juicy hole” is not hot. Third, and this is just a personal issue, but I find the narrator’s accent/affect very distracting? I’ve never heard “Vegas” pronounced that way in my life. It’s not the only example, but it is the most frequent. There are also plenty of mispronunciations or misplaced emphasis that aren’t just regional.

All of that is to say I’m kind of surprised by how not-into-it I am.

Let me tell you: I wept

The end of the first book got me good, but this one got me better. If a book can make me cry like this one did, then it’s a great book.

5/5 emotional investment
5/5 balancing the dark/romance
3/5 narration

The weakest part of this audiobook is the male narrator, whose inflection consistently failed to match what was going on in the story. It was distracting, but not egregious.

Overall, highly recommend, especially if you liked the first book.

Satan's Affair Audiobook By H. D. Carlton cover art

Honestly it’s too much

If you want to read this book, knock yourself out. It comes out of the gate hard, so personally, I’d recommend taking a detour to Satan’s Affair once Sibby/Sibel and Satan’s Affair are introduced in Haunting Adeline. It’s too hard to get invested in on its own, but that would be an easier way to get into it. What I would NOT recommend is this audiobook. The narration is absolutely unbearable. The main character is supposed to be unhinged, but this performance is legitimately gross. There’s very little humanity to it - sex scenes and murder scenes come across with exactly the same dispassionate and childish tone. Awful. Only worth it for the backstory if you read for free on kindle unlimited.

Waybound is exactly the ending that the Cradle series deserves. It’s chock-full of epic fights and heartwarming moments, but the best part of this book is how thoroughly threads from throughout the series wrap up so nicely by the end. Seldom is a series finale so satisfying!

Having listened to the rest of the series at least a half-dozen times, I can say with confidence that this book and its audiobook performance are so rich that I look forward to catching more and making more connections for myself when I enjoy this audiobook again and again. I think eventually, I’ll have listened to Waybound even more times than Wintersteel.

Will and Travis, this entire series has been a triumph, but this installment is its crowning glory. It’s been a gift. I really had so much fun. Gratitude.
