Not just insights from podcast guests
Reviewed: 08-16-23
I’ve listened to most of the My Favorite Mistake podcast episodes, and thought this would be key highlights from the show. But I was pleasantly surprised that it included much more than that, such as history on mistakes and error proofing, keys to cultivating a culture of psychological safety, Mark’s personal and work examples of mistakes, as well as key insights from his guests. I can’t think of anyone that would not benefit from hearing this book.

As a progressive, I agree with most of this book

Despite the off-putting book title, I wanted to hear some other perspectives on a major problem in a wonderful city I’ve visited often. What has been done in the past in SF and other major cities is not working (despite great intentions), and the author did a good job of laying out facts and data, drawing comparisons to other cities, and giving some historical context about California and San Fran. I want the people to get the help they need, and I don’t want to be in fear when going to the BART stations and public areas. If there are better solutions out there, let’s be open to it, regardless of political affiliation. If you care about this issue, I recommend listening to this book.

I enjoyed this book, as I’ve realized I don’t communicate as well as I should. The book gets right to the point without stretching it out into a lengthy book, so I appreciate that! As an atheist, I didn’t like the section about God, it seemed unnecessary, or would suggest mentioning that as an optional consideration. The bonus questions were also a nice addition.

In this latest edition of Audible’s Words + Music series, Vedder dives deep, reflecting on a life at the intersection of art, sensitivity, and masculinity.

Story
Alyssa Milano, actress and activist, delivers here a collection of powerful personal essays that get to the heart of her life, career, and all-out humanitarianism. These essays are unvarnished and elegant, funny and heartbreaking, and utterly real. A timely book that shows in almost real time the importance of taking care of others, it also gives a gut-punch-level wake-up call in an era where the noise is a distraction from what really needs to happen, if we want to live in a better world.

Alyssa‘s activism history is very impressive. I’ve enjoyed listening to her podcast and really enjoyed this book. Her creativity on some of the chapters was also a nice change from other audiobooks (By any other name and mock debate between Lincoln and Trump). She has a lot to say on important current events, so consider hearing her book even if you don’t agree with her views on all topics. I knew about her because of her acting, but I continue to follow because of her brain and heart.

Most organizations want to, and need to, improve their people's problem-solving efforts, and so they offer them tools, templates, and training. Yet this is not where the leverage for impact is found. People Solve Problems: The Power of Every Person, Every Day, Every Problem explores the real leverage to improve your problem solving.
