The synchronicity of neuroscience and scriptural references in addressing how trauma impacts us and how to work through it.

This book has been transformative for me. The authors ability to both clinically and spiritually breakdown the impact of trauma, give us practical tools to support ourselves through the healing process, and her empathetic approach to the daily struggle of trying to rebuild one’s self after experiencing trauma made this book one of the most impactful books I’ve read since “What Happened to You?” Thank you Dr. Phillips.

I love this book and I keep coming back to it for reference. Especially the discussion on the Near Enemies. Not only did I find that I’ve experienced these in my relationships- I discovered that I myself have engaged in near-enemy like behaviors myself. Knowing what that looks like and being able to recognize it is truly helping me to cultivate more honest and meaningful relationships. I am grateful to this author and all those who helped her with this book.

Inspiring me to care for myself on a higher level

My Grandmother used to say that a hard head makes a soft behind. It’s an old saying that talks about a persons ability to take correction and learn from wise counsel. This book is full of wise advice learned through the author’s experiences. The author shares so candidly about the lessons she has learned and I really felt like listening to her was like a conversation with a wiser big sister.
I had never thought about asking myself the three simple questions to check in with me.
It’s changing the way that I care for myself for the better.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

What Happened To You was the perfect combination of science and heart that I needed.
It has given me a deeper understanding of my own trauma history and tons of wisdom as I journey forward trying not to pass on my hurt and trauma to my own children or to continue to dwell in it myself.
You won’t regret the time you spend with this book. 💜

Loved this book. So many golden nuggets of truth. I felt like the author held an unavoidable mirror to my face. Then she carefully you showed me how to wash off the dirt, clean the goop out of my eyes, wash behind my ears, and all those other hidden places that junk can build up. Once the layers were stripped off I felt fresh and renewed and empowered
to look at myself boldly and be ready to take that next step.
