Lee Gulliver never thought she’d find herself living on the streets—no one ever does—but when her restaurant fails, and she falls deeper into debt, she leaves her old life behind with nothing but her clothes and her Toyota Corolla. In Seattle, she parks in a secluded spot by the beach to lay low and plan her next move—until early one morning, she sees a sobbing woman throw herself into the ocean. Lee hauls the woman back to the surface, but instead of appreciation, she is met with fury.

Suspenseful
Reviewed: 10-30-24
I did not really care for the narration. The women were annoyingly vulnerable and it became a bit tedious after a while. it was very suspenseful and overall a decent listen.

Story
In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil.

Heartbreaking but amazing
Reviewed: 05-07-24
This is a story that needed to be told. Although I had heard of the relocation of Japanese Americans during World War II, I don't recall ever being taught about the heroic Japanese American soldiers. This was a heartbreaking but courageous story and although I am not usually a fan of "war stories" I could not stop listening. I felt such shame that our country has not learned anything about the hurt of prejudice. The narrator made this book exceptional but the effort the author went into sharing the stories of these courageous young men needs to be commended. Even if you are not a World War II history buff, this story will be well worth your time.

Bree’s new home is luxurious and private, with a fancy Beverly Hills address. What a shame it’s not hers. Widowed, penniless, living in her car, and out of options, she’s climbed the fence and crashed in the pool house. All she wants is a good night’s sleep. But when Sophie, the absentee owner, finds her, she gets a whole lot more.

Easy listen. Kept my interest. Bree was a bit whiney but not really in an unappealing way. I enjoyed the characters and how they were narrated.

Lewis Madigan is young, gay, out of work, and getting antsy when he’s roped into providing end-of-life care for his insufferable homophobic neighbor, Chester Wheeler. Lewis doesn’t need the aggravation, just the money. The only requirements: run errands, be on call, and put up with a miserable old churl no one else in Buffalo can bear. After exchanging barbs, bickering, baiting, and pushing buttons, Chester hits Lewis with the big ask. Lewis can’t say no to a dying wish.

I had no idea about the history of aviation other than a bit about the Wright brothers. Very informative and I did not get bored listening. Take a chance!

A hopeful look at a dark time

I enjoy reading about WWII history but often (and rightfully so) very depressing. This marvelous book talked about ordinary people on both sides of the war through the eyes of two young women. It was engaging although at times the narrator was a bit over zealous -but I actually came to really and appreciate her attempts to change voice for each character. If you like historical fiction you will not be disappointed!

Story
1838: James and Sadie Goodenough have settled where their wagon got stuck - in the muddy, stagnant swamps of northwest Ohio. They and their five children work relentlessly to tame their patch of land, buying saplings from a local tree man known as John Appleseed so they can cultivate the 50 apple trees required to stake their claim on the property. But the orchard they plant sows the seeds of a long battle. James loves the apples, reminders of an easier life back in Connecticut; while Sadie prefers the applejack they make, an alcoholic refuge from brutal frontier life.

This book was so dark and depressing. It was interesting because of the story of the trees but the people were sad creatures. Someone said the first 2/3 of the book wasn't that great and the last third was pretty good. I would agree with that.
