About this listen

Germany, 1939. A tumbledown farmhouse, on the outskirts of a close-knit village in the heart of the rolling hills of Bavaria. A once happy family home torn apart by Nazi rule. And one young girl who refuses to give up on what she believes in....

London, 2018: When 94-year-old Imogen receives a letter addressed to her in neat, unfamiliar handwriting, she notices the postmark is stamped from Germany - and it sends shivers down her spine....

Germany, 1939: Thirteen-year-old Magda is devastated by the loss of her best friend, shy and gentle Lotte, cruelly snatched from her and sent to a concentration camp – the Star of David sewn on her faded, brown coat. As the Nazi’s power takes hold, Magda realises she’s not like the other girls in her German village - she hates the fanatical new rules of the Hitler Youth. So Magda secretly joins The White Rose Movement and begins to rebel against the oppressive, frightening world around her.

But when an English bomber pilot crashes in a field near Magda’s home she is faced with an impossible choice: to risk the safety of her family or to save a stranger and make a difference in the devastating war that has claimed the lives of so many. Little does she know, her actions will have the power to change the life of another girl, on the other side of enemy lines, forever....

Inspired by a true story, this is a heart-wrenching, gripping and absolutely unforgettable tale of the strength of human kindness in a time of unimaginable heartbreak. Fans of Orphan Train, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Book Thief will be utterly gripped by this beautiful, sweeping, World War Two novel.

Well worth a credit💕

Though there are tons of books about WW2, this was just amazing in showing how the war affected all different people. How people, for and against the Nazi rule, lived, made choices, and the consequences. It is written with the help of a mother’s set and of journals from that period.

This book has a lot history, and it is a dark time in our world, that I pray is never repeated. This is why all history, the positive and the negative should be known and learned from. Hopefully, what happened during WW2 will never be forgotten!

An excellent read...start to finish!

This WWII story was beautifully written, going back and forth between the experiences of two girls (eventually women), one English and one German. The narration was well done and I truly enjoyed listening to every moment of this book!

Well written/well performed

A story of an English girl and a German girl during WWll, following each of their lives separately and how the war is affecting each of them and their families. Neither family is Jewish.

The English girl gets sent to the country with all her other classmates due to the bombings. The German girls’ brother is in England and joins the resistance against Germany. The German family doesn’t like Hitler and what he stands for.

Well performed with English and German accents.

Very Good!

I really enjoyed this book! I love how the author took true events from relatives and made a wonderful book out of the stories! I have read many historical fiction books about this war, and this book is one of my favorites! The horrible scenes weren't described with great detail, which for some people will be a blessing. They had just enough that you knew what happened but didn't have to stop listening because of the images put in your head. Loved this book and all the characters!

Confusing perspectives, but amazing book!

I absolutely loved the book! I struggled to get into the book because it was confusing at first. Because I was listening only, it took me a while to realize it was being told from two separate perspectives since it doesn't specify when it switches perspective.

Good story

This was a very good story that I almost couldn’t listen to because of the screeching voices of some of the characters. The narrator’s voice was beautiful, but other voices she tried to do were terrible. The good story kept me listening.

Great period story WWll

Great story on this period in time. Loved the characters and the way the 2 families came together. I found the narrator too intense at times…Joy’s voice was hard to listen too.

Beautiful story

The story was remarkable. I could truly see the war from both sides. I could feel both women’s emotions throughout. The performance was great.

Hard to Get Past Those Accents...

Overall, a really great story but had a really hard time listening to the narrator. The accents she was doing for the international cast of characters were... a lot. To say the least. If you can fight past that, you'll find a great story!

Would recommend

Enjoyed book & story very much - another sad war time tail of the Nazi’s. Having lived in England I enjoyed the names of small towns & London Places.
I truly disliked Imogene’s voice in the beginning thus the 3 stars on performance.
