Story
While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

The content is excellent but the reading is irritatingly overdramatized! The reader has a strange sleepy, dry mouth voice and the dramatization with words being read at different volumes and pitches in one sentence is absolutely horrendous.

Story
Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

Story
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Story
In a book that took eight years to research and write, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman explores how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty Creator of all things. Ehrman sketches Jesus's transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus's followers had visions of him after his death - alive again - did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God.

Noam Chomsky is one the greatest minds so it’s a given that the content on the book is outstanding. The narrator, however, is one of the worst! His voice will lull you into a deep sleep. I have to listen to the narrator at a faster speed to stay awake. It’s unfortunate that Brian Jones seems to be the narrator for quite a few of Chomsky’s audiobooks.

This book deserves a standing ovation. I’m actual quite disappointed by Obama’s review of the book. It doesn’t appear like he’s actually read it or perhaps he read a random chapter or two and made an assumption. This book is far more profound.

From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

If you are at all cerebral, than this book is not for you. If you are a meathead looking for repetitive “pumping” than this may work. I read this right after reading Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth, a great read, and the content of this book as well as the author’s horrendous delivery made me ill. After years of loving every book I have ever bought on Audible, I have finally come across one I absolutely hated.
