Awareness is the solution to addiction problems
Reviewed: 07-06-21
I gave up a horrendous heroin addiction and cigarettes shortly afterward, simply by becoming aware of the thoughts and cravings in my mind by practicing meditation multiple times a day. At the time I had never heard of this book, but since then I’ve been searching for the scientific reasoning as to why practicing mindful meditation made it so easy for me to give up the vices I had. I heard Brewer give an interview and briefly talk about what to do when a craving for a cigarette arises and it sounded strikingly similar to what I practiced when I got sober. I decided to check out the book and now that I have I am so glad I did. Learning the science behind reward based learning and operant conditioning really helped me understand what happened to me. Great book, and I strongly suggest anyone trying meditation to supplement their practice with a reading of this book.

Story
Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the listener with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation.

Story
In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

Best Stephen king novel
Reviewed: 12-23-20
This is by far the best Stephen king novel. He has a habit in his other books by getting way off track in some stupid love story and getting the reader bored for 400 pages. Not in this one. He stays on point and keeps you wanting more. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to this.

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly.

Unnecessarily slow, good story though.

The story was good but it was soooooo slow, and there was so much that just dragged on. Maybe I was expecting something like the Silent Patient. Dissatisfied, to be honest.

Story
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Pretty good, a tad bit overwritten
Reviewed: 11-13-20
It was a good book and worth the listen but it was a tad bit over written. The beginning of the story hooked me in, and maybe the only time I’ve been sucked in a story that intensely, but as the protagonist starts his life in small town Texas I lose interest. All the attachments Jake Epping has to the characters in Texas, particularly Sadie, seems so unrealistic and makes him look kind of like a loser. A lot of people think it’s the greatest book of all time. I disagree. Good book, not great.

Story
In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.

Steinbeck is the greatest
Reviewed: 10-30-20
I can’t think of any other way of describing this book, other than amazing. Steinbeck takes the reader on a trip across America with his dog, detailing the good, the bad, and the ugly of the greatest country in the world. I’m convinced this should be required reading in schools today, where they now teach how evil America is (it’s not).

Story
In 1936, George Orwell went to Spain to report on the civil war and instead joined the P.O.U.M. militia to fight against the Fascists. In this now justly famous account of his experience, he describes both the bleak and the comic aspects of trench warfare on the Aragon front, the Barcelona uprising in May 1937, his nearly fatal wounding just two weeks later, and his escape from Barcelona into France after the P.O.U.M. was suppressed.

I was extremely disappointed with this one. I was hoping it was going to be as good as 1984 or Animal Farm, but it was just rambling. I stayed optimistic chapter after chapter, hoping it was going to pick up, but never did.
