Remember to breathe. It’s Fantastic!
Reviewed: 09-25-22
What a fantastic read/listen! This had to be one of King’s greatest novels. Grips from the start; the story just builds and builds. What tension! There were parts where I found myself so drawn in that I forgot to breathe. I absolutely do not recommend for those who are disgusted by really foul language throughout the book. Holter Graham does a superb job of narration. Great voices! Excellent presentation. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are parts where the audio drops out or gets scratchy. But these detract very little from the listening pleasure.

Story
In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.

G.O.A.T. American Author
Reviewed: 07-17-22
I was at the Steinbeck House in Salinas this April and asked another patron which of Steinbeck’s works was his favorite. Without hesitation he replied Travels with Charley. Now, having had the amazing Gary Sinise take me on Steinbeck’s journey, this book cements Steinbeck as one of the THE Greatest of All Time American authors. It was pure joy to listen to his first-person riveting accounts of his travels, the places and the people, and his mental meanderings. In 2-months I’ve listened to it twice in it’s entirety. Though written in 1962, the subject matter Steinbeck ruminates on is very contemporary. One realizes how little has changed in the course of 60-years. I highly recommend this book.

Story
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Loved his variety of voicings - tone, inflection, accents, delivery. Hootkins is a hoot to listen to. His rendition of this classic tale is primo. Amazing how fast the 24-hour listen went.

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Ray Porter is one of the very best narrators. His voicings bring each character to life, giving them depth and personality. Highly recommend for those who enjoy Sci-Fi fantasy and mystery.

Story
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

A Tall Tale Well Told
Reviewed: 04-29-21
Wonderfully well-written novel spanning several generations. Beautiful patchwork of characters and their stories. Both characters and their story are extremely well-developed, and their stories flow smoothly separately, and blend together so nicely. Will Patton is a master at voicings and characterizations. He brings this book to life. Run-time is just shy of 18-hours, but you’ll be so entranced with the characters and the stories that the time just slips away. Book was made into a television series (check Hulu) and it doesn’t matter which one you take in first. A rare case when the movie is as good as the book, and vice-versa.

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Fatal Forecast chronicles a dramatic fight for survival aboard two small fishing boats that were ambushed by a horrific surprise storm just southeast of Cape Cod. Soon after the Fair Wind and the Sea Fever reached the fishing ground at Georges Bank, they were hit with hurricane-force winds and massive 90-foot waves that battered the boats for hours. The direction of the wind made it impossible to turn back.

Man versus Nature. I’m IN.
Reviewed: 11-17-20
The story is one we’ve seen/read in Junger’s “The Perfect Storm’’ which occurred in 1991. This story of human struggles against nature, centers on two fishing vessels caught in a tremendous storm in 1980. I love books recounting survival tales. This one captures quickly, but moves a bit slowly and drags just a tad now and then. The narration is just okay. What can I say, I like character voicings! While Cummings did not turn this story into a documentary, to me, he didn’t characterize the people and bring them to life as individuals. The story is awesome. The narration is fair. I’m glad I listened to it.

This classic is a must read for anyone interested in today’s politics, or curious about Socialism and Communism. As Winston Churchill said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” Published in 1945, Orwell’s tale is very relevant today. Read it before the extreme Liberals get it banned and censored. Oh wait, they already started banning this book from many school libraries and reading lists. Check it out before you can’t.

Story
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

I highly recommend this book for WW2 buffs, especially those who appreciate aerial combat planes and pilots. Well researched and superbly written. You’ll learn much about the Luftwaffe pilots and their mindsets towards the war, aerial combat, and their opponents, the fighter pilots and bombers of the Allied forces. What (pleasantly) surprised me most was their attitudes towards the national socialist party. These aviators are good men, fighting for their family and country not the Socialist party. They are men of courage and honor. I loved the story and the literary journey of bringing the two protagonists together. The reading performance is so-so. Dean would be better suited to reading text instead of dialogue and character voicings. Makos is a master storyteller of military accounts. You learn enough of the characters to make it relatable, and just enough about the aircraft (not Clancy-esque). See both sides of the WW2 air war and learn about how the Nazi party handled the war effort.
