Story
For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

The fact that this was released in March 2025 and still correctly pokes fun at our current reality is a bonus. I enjoyed that we saw the story unfold from so many different, unconnected, perspectives. This would be a great book club read with so many things to choose from for discussion. Once again, I love hearing Wil’s voice reading this for me.

Story
The prompt seemed simple: Race. Your Story. Six Words. Please Send. The answers, though, have been challenging and complicated. In the twelve years since award-winning journalist Michele Norris first posed that question, over half a million people have submitted their stories to The Race Card Project inbox. The stories are shocking in their depth and candor, spanning the full spectrum of race, ethnicity, identity, and class. Even at just six words, the micro-essays can pack quite a punch, revealing, fear, pain, triumph, and sometimes humor.

Story
Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world - and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror - a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

Barker can write fantasy, but he is still writing horror
Reviewed: 04-29-25
His descriptions of evil acts/characters can be quite disturbing. I tended to skim over some of this… The bones of his writing is so beautiful, the horror is balanced out. One line early in the book is an example of what pulled me in: “With his lover out of site, he went in search of his heart’s desire.” (Describing Cal going back out in search of the carpet.)

Slow start to an ok romantic thriller

Pacing was slow through the first 1/3 of the book, setting scenes and introducing characters with important back stories. Once that was done, pace picked up but I lacked a connection to the characters. It was okay, but forgettable.

2nd in the series… I love that they bring you into a fantasy world with pieces that are easily recognizable. Additionally, the action has a PG level of violence and no blood and gore. Sex is behind closed doors and language is the “son of a banshee” variety. I look forward to the next!

The technology here is not yet possible, but the rest of the story is all too real. It was actually difficult to read this following the 2024 election. Beyond that, interesting characters that developed as the story progressed. I liked that audio version.

What I liked most about this trail account was that the women look like me right now. If they could do this, then I could too. The trials they faced were real, and things I’ve definitely dealt with on my own backpacking adventures.
