Good information, bad narrator
Reviewed: 11-04-20
I listened to the whole audiobook in just a couple days and I'm excited to put the information to good use. That said, it was clear that the narrator completely missed the mark when it came to the lighthearted, fun energy that the author obviously has. She speaks clearly and it didn't bother me at first, but it grated on my nerves by about halfway through.

This audio novella is a stand-alone prequel to the Cormac Reilly series. Twenty-two-year-old Niamh Turley thought she had problems dealing with the obnoxious principal of the school she’s teaching in as well as the anxious parents of her little charges, but when she wakes one morning to a missing roommate and a garda knocking on her door, her life spirals out of control fast....

Slow boil until it suddenly boils over

The performance is fine, but the story wasn't that interesting. Right up until the end, it's just a series of unfortunate events happening to the main character. It all culminates in the last chapter with what felt like very little build up. The author basically spends the whole book placing set pieces to drop a bomb at the very end. It felt abrupt to me.

Story
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

I couldn't finish it. The wistful tone that the narrator uses from the start never seemed to stop, and it grated on my nerves. Besides that, the story never seemed to go anywhere. I listened for close to two hours before deciding it wasn't going to be a story worth sticking around for.

Story
Dr Jekyll, a charming doctor explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.

Good acting, classic story, right length

The characters seemed to talk in circles when they were flabbergasted in late scenes, but it seemed to fit the situation and I can forgive it for that. Interesting little story that's basically a simple gender swap of the original story. Not sure what I would have paid for it if I didn't get it for free, but it was a good listen for the right amount of time.

Drawing from his training with pioneer in the field Dr. Elaine Aron, and his own groundbreaking work, Falkenstein incorporates the most up-to-date research on high sensitivity - what it is and isn't - how it relates to male identity, and provides one-of-a-kind advice and practical tools.

Informative, mildly repetitive, drab narrator
Reviewed: 10-30-20
The book has good information and was definitely worth the credit I spent on it. My chief complaints are that it feels a bit redundant at times and it would benefit from having a PDF for the lists and exercises mentioned. The narrator speaks clearly, but his tone and speech pattern are stilted and unnatural, making it very obvious he's reading the book verbatim.
I had never heard of highly sensitive persons until my wife found this book on the shelf, so it was very informative for me. I think I'm a highly sensitive man on the low end of the spectrum. The book helped me understand the phenomenon and how to live with it effectively. I would easily recommend this book to anyone who's curious about the subject or needs guidance on how to live with it.

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

What this book did, it did quite well. My problem is that it wasn't what one would expect from the title. I was expecting a dramatic telling of world history with emphasis on events like the development of agriculture, the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, ancient Egypt, and early American history leading up to today. What I got was essentially a series of sermons on a scientific perspective of prehistory which is founded almost entirely on speculation. It makes for an interesting story, but I feel no better off for having listened to it.

On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

Delivered wonderfully in the form of live speeches, the message conveyed in The Power of Vulnerability equip the listener with attitudes/mindsets/skills that are crucial to navigating life; especially difficult social situations. I can't recommend this audiobook highly enough for people of all ages and backgrounds.
