Publisher's summary

Highly sensitive people think deeply, empathize instinctively, and behave in an ethical way that benefits everyone. Today, with the negative effects of "toxic masculinity" and aggressive behavior in evidence all around us, we need highly sensitive people - especially men - more than ever. Yet for men in particular, being highly sensitive brings distinct challenges, such as gender stereotypes that portray them as too emotional or not "manly" enough.

Cognitive behavioral psychotherapist Tom Falkenstein offers the first psychological guide that specifically addresses highly sensitive men and those who care about them, and explores the unique advantages and obstacles they face. Drawing from his training with pioneer in the field Dr. Elaine Aron, and his own groundbreaking work, Falkenstein incorporates the most up-to-date research on high sensitivity - what it is and isn't - how it relates to male identity, and provides one-of-a-kind advice and practical tools, including:

  • Self-assessment tests to measure high sensitivity
  • Strategies to cope with overstimulation and intense emotions
  • Exercises that enhance relaxation, mindfulness, and acceptance
  • Advice on self-care and self-compassion
  • Techniques to deal with situations that highly sensitive people often find difficult
  • Interviews with men who have learned to live well with high sensitivity
  • Insights into the key role that highly sensitive men have to play in today's world

Including an illuminating conversation with Dr. Aron, The Highly Sensitive Man is an invaluable audiobook that will help redefine masculinity and reveal how high sensitivity can enrich men's lives, their communities, and the lives of those who love them.

valuable techniques/perspectives

I think it's especially hard for men to be highly sensitive, since it's expected for them to be stoic and suck it up. This book offers great techniques for helping male HSPs treat themselves kindly and find what works for them, instead of judging themselves for not living up to the outdated ideal. Indeed, the book argues that male HSPs have a unique opportunity to challenge this ideal, since they need to in order to thrive. What a great message!

There aren't many books like this!

This is a great primer for any men out there (myself included) who are waking up to the reality, goodness, and value of their sensitivity. The book does read a little like a presentation and was challenging to follow at times. However, the information is invaluable.

I really recommend the content of this book and I'm grateful to the author for making this available.

Informational and practical

First of all I’m a highly sensitive man (just found out while reading this). I’m also a psychologist in training.

This book is very informative since it has the psychological and biological information about high sensitivity. It also has very practical aspects and great stories.

The only star I took off the review is because of a minor problem of the audiobook. Sometimes there are long lists that are made for written books but not for audiobook and you have to hear the whole list for minutes. For example there are questionnaires with a long list of posible answers and all of the answers are read to you.

Overall it’s a very good book on the topic. Probably the best.

Best book I ever read to learn about myself

Love the book, great addition to HSP library. Highly sensitive men need this book. Nothing more helpful to understand myself and relationships, situations, career in accordance with my temperament and highly sensitive self. Can't wait to relisten to this as the years go on.

Informative, mildly repetitive, drab narrator

The book has good information and was definitely worth the credit I spent on it. My chief complaints are that it feels a bit redundant at times and it would benefit from having a PDF for the lists and exercises mentioned. The narrator speaks clearly, but his tone and speech pattern are stilted and unnatural, making it very obvious he's reading the book verbatim.

I had never heard of highly sensitive persons until my wife found this book on the shelf, so it was very informative for me. I think I'm a highly sensitive man on the low end of the spectrum. The book helped me understand the phenomenon and how to live with it effectively. I would easily recommend this book to anyone who's curious about the subject or needs guidance on how to live with it.

Excellent

Right up there with Dr Elaine Aron’s book on HSPs. Good length book without much fluff.
