About this listen

First published to critical acclaim in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson’s mesmerising thriller is a terrifying study of the duality of man's nature, and it is the book which established Stevenson's reputation as a writer.

In this Audible Original drama Stevenson’s story is transported to modern-day London, and instead we meet Henrietta Jekyll and Eleanor Hyde.

Dr Jekyll, a charming doctor, explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.

Starring Holliday Grainger (Cinderella, My Cousin Rachel, Strike) and Carla Mendonça (My Parents Are Aliens, So Awkward).

Also starring Tim Bentinck, Bill Fellows, Hugh Fraser, Holliday Grainger, Clive Mantle, Carla Mendonca, Katarina Olsson, Miranda Raison and Hugh Ross.

About the Creator

Robert Louis Stevenson was born November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stevenson was sickly as a child, making school attendance difficult. When not being tutored at home, he spent his time reading and writing stories. As a poet and novelist, he achieved fame for stories that have delighted fans for over a century in print, on the stage, and in film. In audio, he is best known for the highly acclaimed and full-cast recordings of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and also for the popularity of Kidnapped, Black Arrow, and South Sea Tales. He died December 3, 1894 in Vailima, Samoa.

Our Ineer Demon

I've always love the Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story, it's been done so many times this might be the first time I see it with a woman.

The story is really good I enjoyed it the only thing that thru me off was the time? I thought it was taking place in the same time as the other stories it gave me that feeling then I hear email and atm and that kinda thru me off. Maybe I wasn't paying attention to the details in the very beginning or I just assumed it was taking place in the early maybe 1900s, I don't know.

The overall story is great, I can see the character in my head. A short woman, maybe disfigured looking almost animal like. Very scary to think about and more so when you move further into the story and get a full detail of how she turned into her.

I wish their was more in the perspective of the doctor, I don't think we saw anything until the end it was in a letter her friends were reading. The whole story is thru someone else seeing and trying to understand what is happening. I couldn't connect with that because we as the viewer are already aware. I would of liked more to see things thru her, but maybe it's been done?

I still enjoyed it, great read and I did look to see if their is a movie on the works, I didn't see anything. I would love a movie and then come back and read this instead of just listening to it. Even though the audio performance with the sound effects is amazing.

Great entertainment

The performers were terrific, especially Holliday Granger. I loved the idea of a female lead character in this classic.

Constant Character Drinking Annoying.

Full cast is great. Swallowing sounds and constant drinking quickly became an annoyance and irritating to hear. Could have gladly done without this parts as they didn't add anything to the story.

perfectly twisted

Suitably twisted and affective in an eerie story telling fashion. A radio-type drama with entertaining characters and sound affects. Does leave one with an after taste of horror.

I loved it !

I like this modern twist and the variant of the main character to be a female and I think that makes all the difference. Enjoy !

Good, short read

At first, I was not sure if I could get through the story with so many voices, but I made it through, good story.
