Worthwhile
Reviewed: 01-28-25
Overall, this was worth listening to. I did think the reenactments were unnecessary and could’ve just been read. But I thought it was a very interesting story and something that I really didn’t know about. I had never heard of Glenn Shirley, but I’m very familiar with Cash’s Album.
I would probably give this 3 1/2 stars but rounding up instead of down because I do think that it’s a thought provoking piece that looks at the troubled life of Johnny Cash and the impact he had on those when he tried to help them.

Story
One of Faulkner's comic masterpieces, The Reivers is a picaresque story that tells of three unlikely car thieves from rural Mississippi. Eleven-year-old Lucas Priest is persuaded by Boon Hogganbeck, one of his family's retainers, to steal his grandfather's car and make a trip to Memphis. The priests' black coachman, Ned McCaslin, stows away, and the three of them are off on a heroic odyssey.

What a gem!

I’ve read almost all of Faulkners work and The Reivers was one I had not.
It’s charming and easy to understand. There’s no puzzle to solve, no stream of consciousness. Just a sweet story of innocence, youth and the sometimes bittersweet journey into experience.

Story
In her late 20s, Cait Flanders found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy - only keeping her from meeting her goals - she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. The Year of Less documents Cait's life for 12 months during which she bought only consumables.

A lot of memoir and precious little self help
Reviewed: 01-07-20
Five and half hours. Three about being an alcoholic without using the word "alcoholic." Two hours about the trauma of her parents divorcing (when she was nearly 30!) and about 45 minutes of actual practical advice.
She does a pretty decent job of reading it, but it was simply too much about her other issues and too little about actually giving up possessions. Had it been longer, I would have probably not finished it and returned it.

Excellent book, bad editing
Reviewed: 06-17-19
It’s just a superbly written book but the edit of the narrator was not terribly good. And if you listen at a fast speed, it’s pretty noticeable. I have the kindle book as well and when I would listen to that was AWFUL. It would cut out the end of sentences.
Read it, but the narration edit on this is bad.

I’m sorry I cannot recommend
Reviewed: 03-08-19
The book was unfinished at the time of the author’s death and because of that, it’s not terribly satisfying. It might be really good in paper format but as an audiobook is disjointed and confusing. One chapter is simply a transcript of the author talking to a detective (or rather, the narrator reading the transcript).
I’m sorry the author died and it seems she was a good writer, it this just felt like a hodgepodge.

Enjoyable
Reviewed: 09-25-14
What made the experience of listening to Lucky Us the most enjoyable?
I hadn't listened to any new fiction on audible (sticking to non fiction and books I had already read) until I got this one on vacation and I found it very engaging, good story, and it really sold me on the audiobook for new fiction idea. I recommend this book!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Fransisco....I really was interested him and wished I had more of him!
What about Alicyn Packard’s performance did you like?
She reads well and doesn't get goofy with the voices, but does emphasize the differences.
If you could rename Lucky Us, what would you call it?
I have no idea! LOL
