Story
Gary Thorn is struggling with a big decision. Should he stay in London, wallowing in the safety of his legal job in Peckham and eating pies with his next door neighbour, Grace and her dog Lassoo, or should he move to Brighton, where his girlfriend Emily is about to open The Hotel Avocado? Either way, he’d be letting someone down. But sinister forces are gathering in a cloud of launderette scented-vape smoke, and the arrival of the mysterious Mr Sequence puts Gary in an even worse predicament: soon he might be dead.

Another highly enjoyable adventure for Bob Mortimer’s quirky but loveable characters. Excellent job having the parts read by different people, too. Hope this one wins another Wodehouse Bollinger Prize!

Brilliantly funny, but only if you’re actually interested in English history. What I mean is, it’s a real history book, You could use it to teach history if it wasn’t for the occasional swear word. So if you’re not truly interested in English history, you might get a bit bored after a while. If you DO like history, though, this is a highly enjoyable take on the subject.

This collection is in the style of Sketches by Boz or even, in some chapters, Pickwick, so if you like your Dickens (and company) in that light-hearted, character study vein, you will probably like this.

If you like Dickens's style of pathos, you will like this collection. Written very well, of course, but if Philip Bird were not such a good reader I could not have finished it.

Sapper Meets Wodehouse
Reviewed: 09-19-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to my friends who value charming wordplay and a happy ending over a credible plot.
What other book might you compare Grey Mask to and why?
The plot reminded me of the books by Sapper (fun, but highly unlikely) and some of the wordplay was almost as good as Wodehouse and made me laugh out loud.
Have you listened to any of Diana Bishop’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Diana Bishop was a new narrator for me and I thought she did an excellent job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I could have listened to it in one sitting without getting bored.
Any additional comments?
I look forward to listening to more of the Miss Silver books.

Aaarrgh! I wish I had listened to the reviewer who said the music made listening to this book intolerable. I thought if was worth a shot because I liked the sample of Jeremy Northam's reading so much, but it was a complete waste of a hard-earned credit. It is the same wretched piece of music every single time, it plays ever five minutes, and it's louder than the reading (like commercials during TV shows). Someone should lose their job over this because it would have been so enjoyable otherwise.

Brilliant Book, Dreadful Reader
Reviewed: 02-13-08
As with "Equal Rites," Isis Audio made the tragic mistake of having someone other than Nigel Planer read this book. Celia Imrie's reading style is twee and she cannot even pronounce the character's names correctly. Read this one on your own and then listen to "Witches Abroad" (read by Mr. Planer, thank gods).

Story
Right before the wise old wizard Drum Billet died, he passed on his magical staff of power to the newborn eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately, Drum Billet never bothered to check the gender of the newborn baby, and it turns out to be a girl. Now his chauvinistic colleagues are forced to deal with a young girl who has all the qualifications to join their all-male profession. Terry Pratchett's third Discworld novel, Equal Rites, asks many provocative questions about magic, where it goes, where it comes from, and why.

Book 5, Reader Less Than Zero
Reviewed: 02-13-08
The Isis Audio editions of Pratchett's books with Nigel Planer as the reader are superb. For some tragic reason, however, they had a woman read this book and she is ghastly. She reads in a sicky-sweet style and fails to pronounce the character's names correctly. If I ever win the lottery I will personally pay Mr. Planer to record this book!
