This book was particularly enlightening given events occurring in the US and globally at the opening of 2025. It puts many historical occurrences in context and explains motivations for groups within the US and their actions over the last decade, particularly the role of fascist ideology and authoritarianism in the service of religion. I hope the author will revisit this material at some point with updated information and commentary about developments from 2000 to present.

Having read the book several times, the story and writing was just as entertaining as ever. The reader, however, tended to have a voice that droned on sonorously at times. On the bright side, I’d never thought to give the fairy a Scottish accent.

“Homeland” is just a fantastic recounting of the origins of Drizzt Do’Urden and an introduction to Drow society, Menzoberranzan, and the Underdark more broadly. Likewise, the narrator does an excellent job of bring the narrative and its characters to life. Well worth the listen.

I have always enjoyed Mr. Attenborough’s narration on television, and perhaps naively, I’d had no idea that he’d written books or narrated them. So I came into this audiobook with excited anticipation, and I was not in the least disappointed. His voice, of course, needs no elaboration from the likes of myself, but the writing of this book is fabulously descriptive and engaging, and somehow manages to neatly tie together not only the origin of life but its evolution and change over the sweep of eons. I would wholeheartedly recommend this audiobook to anyone interested in a concise yet comprehensive description of the origin and evolution of Earth’s life forms. It’s truly a joy.

The story rating is 3 because this is non-fiction, so story isn’t a consideration. Book was very informative and enlightening.

Of course the book is good as most folks know, but I did want to give a particular shout out to Jim Dale. His performances of these books has been exemplary, and his individual voice characterizations have been consistent and spot on throughout. Makes the reading very enjoyable. Looking forward to the final book.

Reference Work That’s Still a Fun Listen

Three stars on story because, this being a reference work, there really isn’t one. That said, the work is full of smaller stories as the reader proceeds through the various mobster reference entries. I found it to be an interesting and engaging listen, and the reader did a fabulous job of conveying the deadpan character of the humor found throughout the book.

Love this series of books by Keith Ammann. Extremely useful for both DMs and players alike. For this particular audiobook however, I would characterize the audio performance as inconsistent, both in tone of voice as well as possibly actor. Some portions of the reading sounded so different as to make me wonder if someone else had made an unannounced guest appearance, and at times, there’s a hint of exasperation in the reader’s tone that makes it feel as though he’s just trying to get through it. Still, as a reference work essentially, it’s still very useful, and the content is interesting enough to make it an engaging listen.
