Germany, 1946: Emmy Clarke is a librarian not a soldier. But that doesn’t stop the Library of Congress from sending her overseas to Germany to help the Monuments Men retrieve and catalog precious literature that was plundered by the Nazis. The Offenbach Archival Depot and its work may get less attention than returning art to its rightful owners, but for Emmy, who sees the personalized messages on the inside of the books and the notes in margins of pages, it feels just as important.

This is an important book and a fascinating story. While I was reading it, I thought of the character I would like to possess in such circumstances. In that way, I think it could be very useful in the coming storm in our country. May we all find the bravery and moral compass and love of beauty presented in the book.

Every American Should Read

No matter their politics, every American voter should read this book. We are living in very scary times. Liz Cheney is correct that our country can survive 4 years of bad policy decisions (read: any policy you don’t agree with), but our country cannot survive the trashing of the Constitution and the rule of law. We can’t run from this. We have to face it. Read this book!

Story
Scholar and award-winning author Faith Fitzgerald has every reason to be happy: a wealthy, charming man who adores her and a family cheering her marriage prospects. But from the moment she meets Eric's sister, Sydney Van Allen, she knows her safe, predictable feelings for him are a shadow of what could be. Openly lesbian and running for senator, Sydney can only succeed if she can live down her wild past. That means no liaisons, especially with the achingly alluring woman on her brother's arm who looks at her with confusion - and desire.

An excellent “Pride” listen

I am Catholic, and I am lesbian. It has been many years since I went through the turmoil that character Faith faces in this book. This was written prior to mobile phones and gay marriage. Oh my! It brought up old feelings, and yet it was healing. I appreciate how the genre has changed. It used to be that one of us had to die in a lesbian pulp novel. Then we had to explain that we weren’t demons. Now we are “free” to feel the devastating pain of divorce. Oh, how the world has changed! Beyond that, this is a well-written and interesting book. Being a person of modest income, it is always a fantasy to read about people who have more money than they will ever need in one lifetime. I fantasize that they would pay off my school loans and car payment! Nevertheless, we persist. Thank you for this book, Karin Kallmaker. I greatly enjoyed it.

Love Elena Graf and the Hobbs series! I am a little off-put that the virtual voice sounds like my agency’s IT Help Desk voice. But that has not put me off these books. The author is amazing. Even when dealing with hard issues, the story is hopeful and loving. This sounds like the kind of life I am trying to create with my own friend group in my own small town. Give this series a chance … either through virtual voice or ebook. It is so good. It is how life should be.
