About this listen

Scholar and award-winning author Faith Fitzgerald has every reason to be happy: a wealthy, charming man who adores her and a family cheering her marriage prospects. But from the moment she meets Eric's sister, Sydney Van Allen, she knows her safe, predictable feelings for him are a shadow of what could be.

Openly lesbian and running for senator, Sydney can only succeed if she can live down her wild past. That means no liaisons, especially with the achingly alluring woman on her brother's arm who looks at her with confusion - and desire.

I will listen to anything read by Abbey Crayden. Growing up Catholic and having very strict religious parents made this book hit home

excellent story

Woooowheeeee! What a story! As a recovering Catholic myself the writer did not miss the mark! So deep and authentic — loved it loved it loved it — great introduction to this author and I loved the history motif — enjoyed learning about ancient English queens and how women ran kingdoms — cause believe me in school it was all about the men — he he he he he all the time - I got tired of laughing and it wasn’t until I asked where are the women in the past that Mr Lopez started telling us about women’s contributions to history! And as usual Abby is fantastic!!! She adds depth and realness to whatever she reads! A+ Abby well done and the writer gets an A+ as well! Well worth the credit!! Learned about the past and love at the same time! Great story!!

Excellent Story

The abrupt ending. The story went from now to forever and marriage in a paragraph.

Religious conflict

Such complex characters bring matched up. Appreciate the very real life perspective on religion, faith and politics. Keeping it nice and short was perfect.

Very drastic sides

Listening to the book after having read it back in 1996, brought back all the political memories from that decade. The audiobook version was delightful and still expresses a very powerful message that the LGBTQ+ community is actively present and must stay strong.

Well done

I love the story of Sydney and Faith. I think anyone can relate to their story in one way or another. And getting to the scene that the updated cover is based on was such a delight for me! It's perfect. I wish their story was longer.

Still one of my favorite stories by KK

Half the story is a history lesson & other half is about identity-struggles in love relationships. True depiction of conflicts between religious upbringing, forced beliefs, internalized turmoils, suppressed identity, and family pressures. The Catholic faith aspect was dead on. First book I’ve read that covers this topic. Very relatable and well done! Abby Craden was fantastic, as always.

Good read & topic

Forcing oneself to live a straight life when one is not straight will never make for true happiness. Faith was so brainwashed from her ultra religious family and their Catholic church, that she tried so hard to deny who she really was and live a straight life. Sydney was trying to not relive her past life, as she was and alcoholic and a slut. Faith was the one person that could keep her calm, faithful and alcohol free.
