The author writes as though we are children

Too boring and too dense
Reviewed: 04-15-24
The author is so desperate to answer every single question and approach every single angle that I found the book so dense and so frustrating. only about a quarter of the info in it applies to me and I spent so long skipping the unnecessary parts I found it a waste of time and effort. the narrator is slow speaking and tough to listen to.

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery - magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power. Best series I've read so far. I'm only 22 but I'm a voracious reader and I have listened and re-listened to this series since I first got it. Start with Name of the Wind of course. If you already have, this second novel is wicked. Really develops our characters. You'll love it!

Story
Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them? Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother.

She's a SWERF. She literally sl** shames in the book, that's not real feminism. HOWEVER I would still 10/10 recommend bc she really inspired me to be more of a feminist, an activist, and myself. I haven't shaved my armpits since I read that book, oh and hint, if you think that's gross maybe this book is for you.

Okay, it was good and fun. But Claire was such a Mary Sue in the worst of ways, so helpless when it came down to it. Also had a lot of internalized homophobia, I know y'all think I'm a crazy SJW, but it kind of implied all the gays in the boom were rapists which was.. strange. It was fun and whimsical, and Jaime is so so attractive, so I get the draw. Loved the percormance, I'm a sucker for Scottish accents.

The ending was.. confusing. The story was wild and the resolution was a shock. It was so wild, so strange but I loved it. Matrona was quite a meek heroine, but she really came into it in the end.
