About this listen

“If you are looking for magic you will find it inside this book. Sorcery of Thorns is a bewitching gem, full of slow burning romance, loyal friendships, and extraordinary world building. I absolutely loved every moment of this story.” (Stephanie Garber, number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Caraval series)

From the New York Times best-selling author of An Enchantment of Ravens comes an imaginative fantasy about an apprentice at a magical library who must battle a powerful sorcerer to save her kingdom.

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery - magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but so could the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught - about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed and a future she could never have imagined.

Triggered the binge mode
"There’s a lot of really cool things going on here, but what really got me was that there are magic books in this story. They’re called grimoires, and they’re what sorcerers read to learn magic. They’re like the books at Hogwarts, but with even more personality. They can talk, and they need to be cared for, so being a librarian is far from a leisurely job. That’s what our main character, Elisabeth, is training to be when the action happens—it’s a librarian adventure fantasy story! If that isn’t catnip for us YA fantasy lovers, I don’t know what is. This listen, with Emily Ellet at the helm as narrator, promises much, and it follows through from beginning to end."

Enjoyable, verrrrrrry unique

I liked this book, it wasn't anything outstanding but I found the magic system to be easy enough to understand. I loved the grimore idea, I found them intriguing and wished that there was more description as to when, where and why they were created and how the demon realm came to be.

I enjoyed the main characters. The romance was cheesy or forced and their development was fluid. I loved Silus, he was very interesting. I would have liked to get more information about his background with the Thorne family.

I was very excited to read this book at first and it did not disappoint on story telling. I gave it 4 stars because there was a lack of world building and back story that made me have to fill in some blanks myself and made the ending anti-climactic and the villains plot not make any real sense. Maybe it did but I didn't catch it properly because unimportant scenes where drawn out. The areas that could have used more storytelling were replaced with trivial scenes that could have been removed. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, There was very little action when it could have been a fall out demon battle. That would have given it 5 stars...but instead we got the opposite and the ending came in a flash of light..literally.

So it was too long with added plot points thrown in but not fully explored and parts that were not explained when they should have been. Maybe there is going to be a sequel..which I might check out, but I wont be re-reading this one anytime soon.

I loved this book!!

I really enjoyed this book. To me it seemed to have some refreshingly new ideas. I thought the narrator did a great job as well. I read another book by the same author and loved that one as well. I hope she comes out with many more and soon!!

One of my all time favorites

This is only the author’s second book ever published and her first book “ An Enchantment of Ravens “ blew my mind for a 1st time book & fairytale.
A Sorcery of Thorns just touches my heart.
I adore the characters, the concept, the connections, the sweet romance, the lead fella and his family history and his relationship with his demon.
Another reviewer mentioned places where there could have been more back story and world building, and this is a solid point, but I never really missed anything about background , history, or needing a bigger more showy ending.
It’s a comfort book for me personally, I’ve now listened to it , I believe 3 maybe 4 times and I’m still in Love.
There is truly something really unique and special about this author and how she creates characters.
For me it hits the spot on so many levels.
You can’t and won’t please everyone as a writer/or with any craft, reviews are totally subjective, how people experience a book is so personal and unique to that individual.
For me this book is MAGICAL and one of my happiness places to visit.

Cute!

Elisabeth, a librarian living in a supernatural world, must go on a perilous journey of discovery to save the world from a corrupt sorcerer trying to destroy everything she holds dear.

This was a very sweet and easy listen. It was a great feel good and different type of romance, action and sci-fi. I loved the diverse set of relationships developed in the story. There was romance, friendship, and Elisabeth's relationship with her books. The development of each was truly magical and ended epically bringing all forms of love together in one.

I recommend this imaginative tale. You will not only enjoy the book, but also think twice about your own paasions and loves in your own life.

Great story

I love the world and the charcters.
The ending felt a little rushed, I didn't like that the last part was told in past tense.

Much better than I expected

I'm not sure exactly what I expected but this story was a surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and found myself gasping and giggling. Elisabeth isn't your typical girl and I love that. Katrien is the perfect bad influence best friend. Nathaniel was absolutely charming and despite the fact that Silas was supposed to be evil, he really wasn't.

a good read

Full of magic, this story is an exciting tale well written and full of non stop adventure with a nice love plot thrown in. I just wish the narration was better recorded. it kept slicing in narrative rerecords that you could tell were recorded separately and it had a different tone. it was noticable enough to be annoying.

Absolutely Amazing!!

Ms. Emily Ellet gave an astounding performance, not as just a narrator, but as the voice for every character and thought within this book's pages. The book itself has several moments that are lingering in my mind as I write this review now, having just finished the epilogue. I assure you, this book is bewitching in an endearing way, and you will most certainly fall in love with Elisabeth, Nathaniel, Silas, and all of the other wonderful characters in this tome.

As someone who has struggled to find a book that has satisfied my thirst for a Harry Potter- like book without having to endorse the Author-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named of that particular series, my hunger has been more than saited, and I now realize that there are fantasy books more well written and performed than Harry Potter.
