Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

No lie fast forwarded through the first few chapters except for Marcellus's diary entries. Then somewhere a third way into the book the human story became interesting to me.. And of course intertwined with Marcellus's story. I enjoyed a lot. Marcellus's voice was captivating. And his personification- genius. Overall was A bit sappy for my taste. Overall I enjoyed the story. I cared about the characters. Well I cared about Marcellus.

Story
Many other mainline Christians viewed the Quakers as a dangerous sect, so much so that they pressured the British Parliament to pass the Quaker Act of 1662. This act set forth in law the “prescribed form” of prayer and worship as designated by the state. It was a formula that specifically left the traditions of the Quakers out. Unable to gain acceptance in England, the Quakers would soon leave the place of their origin altogether and try their luck in a brave new world on another continent.

Story
Until the 1930s, nationalism had always tended to be a phenomenon of the right-wing or the immigrant anarchists and Bolsheviks. Now, however, the emphasis shifted to the middle ground, and ironically, one of the issues driving Argentine nationalism was the outsized British presence in Argentine affairs, stoked recently by the preferential trade agreement. Perhaps most importantly, the seizure by the British in 1833 of the Islas Malvinas (or as the British termed them, the Falkland Islands) remained a sore point.

Story
The "southern cone" of South America has a vibrant yet checkered history. Argentina in 1920 was a productive and wealthy nation, yet by the 1980s was reduced to virtual third world status. Chile has a long history of internal strife, usually with representative politics until authoritarians seized power in 1973. Chile was influenced by Spanish conquerors; Argentina's Italian and German immigrants made it the most "European" of any South American country.

She was a saint. I remember my dad saying she was a Great person. Now I know why. what a touchstone to so many aspects of our modern lives. Perfect example of why political polarization today makes me boil....Her sensibilities cross lines, and reminds me of the sensibilities I grew up with. We could all learn from her example, and should be treating her in textbooks as we treat Founding Fathers. People today are lazy about developing social capital, albeit she was a genius, we should be better, nevertheless.

In this magisterial and acclaimed history, Anne Applebaum offers the first fully documented portrait of the Gulag, from its origins in the Russian Revolution, through its expansion under Stalin, to its collapse in the era of glasnost.

"With humor and lyrical grace," Kathleen Norris meditates on a place in the American landscape that is at once desolate and sublime, harsh, and forgiving, steeped in history and myth (San Francisco Chronicle). A combination of reporting and reflection, Dakota reminds us that wherever we go, we chart our own spiritual geography.

I needed to hear this. I needed this friend to help me cope and give names to misty voices. Extra-interesting as I knew the Dakota of the 80s and see how much it has changed, yet remains the same. The Dakota gentleman farmer seems lost to history, however. Major loss in the mind and spirit of this place. I would have any friend who wonders what it's like for someone who moves here from any major metro area read this to understand life here...the rips and pulls and comforts and found beauty. A friend from here gave me the book to help me adjust, or simply commiserate intellectually. I gave to my mom to help her understand. Spot on. The woven Benedictine journey is moving and charming.
