A good fantasy read

An interesting world of spirits and other worldly beings awaits you in this title. Full of strife and fighting against greater powers but with a clear and somewhat frustrating amount to short sightedness from our protagonist. Of course this leaves room for future books that I a may in time read/listen to but don’t feel the burning need to get right away.

An interesting book and audiobook format. I found it interesting how different narrators would peak different sections. Though I knew few of the speakers their introductions lended greater weight to the overall message of positive thoughts lead to good things. While I am not entirely on board with this thesis it is good reminder to be more mindful and positive thinking in my day to day life.

Great book! A bit predictable and lacking in seriousness edging toward more teen book status minus the steamy sex scenes. Narration was good but got a little on my nerves during the battle scenes.

Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

Just So, So
Reviewed: 02-13-24
This is the only book I have read by Asimov, it is possible I might appreciate it more if I had read his other more well known books. I have seen "I, Robot" with Will Smith which is based on one of Asimov's books by the same name and keeping the theme of that story in mind the conclusion of this book throws some big read flags.
Putting that aside, this book by itself was interesting in the different hypothetical cultures of different peoples in a future where the human population numbers more than can reasonably be counted across some 25 million different worlds. It is narrated by the same narrator as Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged", among many other books, which in conjunction with wording in the book, which seems similar to that of Ayn Rand's books, I expected some interesting philosophical points to be made. On that front, I was disappointed. Despite the books attempts at creating some hype about a fictional hypothetical mathematical model that could be used to predict probable futures I found myself entirely underwhelmed. I was further frustrated by the larger theme of the degradation of a society in part due to the overspecialization of people. He raises this point with select characters but loses it with others which suggests it is not really the cause of the issue though given the points about complexity of creating a model for predicting the future was never going to be the sole reason for the degradation anyways.
Ultimately, I would have liked either more fantasy and world building from this book or more philosophy. Having gotten too little of either I found this book only so so, 3 stars all around.

A pleasant addition to the world of alegasia. The dragon voice isn’t my favorite and I could use some more depth as to the personal challenges faced by those who have experienced such horrors.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

A Fun Addition to the Series
Reviewed: 05-05-23
I was a big fan of the original trilogy and this latest addition is a fun and worthy continuation to the series. The change in writing style was fun and full of good little snippy jokes mixed in with some near philosophy. It did lead to some confusing moments and I hope the future books will not follow the same style but it was a worthy change that shows Weeks' quality as an author.
I do have some reservations about the story; firstly it has been some time since I read the other books and could have used some better easing in to this latest addition as is common in many series. Without giving anything away, I thought the last chapters that outline one possible rational to the events a very long shot and Vi's failure to see her own manipulation time and again to be very frustrating.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed the book and look forward to future additions, Fingers crossed we are not waiting as long for the next!

No better than the first
Reviewed: 03-12-23
I enjoyed the first book in this series but had some reservations. I was hoping some of those reservations would be cleared up in this and was disappointed. My greatest reservation is the fact that the main character is near hysteric for the majority of the book. She is the bystander of major events and fails to step up and be apart of them time and time again. Beyond the main characters irritatingly hysteric demeanor there are a few other aspects to the writing that leave me further annoyed but leave it at that.
I enjoy the narration. I find female narrators less common and to be less enjoyable to listen to (personal opinion). She does a great job, so great that the hysterics of the main character felt very hysterical. Take that how you will.

A good book, very similar to the first. While book 2 continues where book 1 left off the plot does not seem to grow which I would have like to see. Still worth the read/listen and will enjoy doing the same with the last book in the trilogy.
