About this listen

Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle. Join Dragon Rider—and fan favorite—Murtagh and his dragon as they confront a perilous new enemy!

The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society.

Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air—and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini’s blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time . . . or to joyfully return.

Critic reviews

"Twenty years after ERAGON, Gerard Doyle's familiar and compelling voice returns to narrate MURTAGH.... Doyle's talent for accents and passionate battle sequences shines, complementing the author's vivid world. Murtagh's voice resonates with a Scottish lilt, and Thorn's is a deep, throaty rumble. Doyle's somber narration of their torturous upbringing will break listeners' hearts. Yet, amid the shadows, the narrative brightens as the inseparable pair confront seemingly insurmountable challenges--and triumph through the strength of their bond." (AudioFile)

"A much-needed follow-up centering a beloved character." —Kirkus Reviews

Good start for a great character

I really enjoyed a return back to this series. Murtagh is a great character with a lot of depth and it’s a good start. I hope we get more.

YES!!

My heart is full knowing that more is coming. These books have partnered with me through some of the hardest times of my life. And I couldn’t ask for a better narrator.

Cathartic Freedom

Oh. My. Lanta. I knew Murtagh would be a ride but my heart barely survived. Paolini's grasp of trauma, survival, and freedom runs so true, it may as well be written in the ancient language. Thorn and Murtagh are so freaking wholesome with each other, and are friendship goals. They respect each other's broken pieces, love each other, and push where they need it, but also will call each other out. That final battle is so cathartic and beautiful, and will stay with me forever. 💚Freedom💚.

Ps, I'm so sorry for spamming your "X" Mr. Paolini. Thank you so much for returning, and I look forward to what you have in store in both fantasy and sci-fi. 💚💚💚 imma go cry now.

Fire

Fire book. Wonderful insight to Murtagh and the reasons for why he did the things that he did during the inheritance cycle. Brilliant final chapter. And better yet, in the “Afterward & Acknowledgments” we get confirmation from the author that there are more books in the world of Alagaësia to come.

Great book, loved it.

Loved the book! Fingers crossed that we won't need another anniversary just to sneak back into Alagaësia. :)

Great Book! Has me looking forward to the future books in Alegaesia.

I loved the Inheritance Cycle as a kid, and am really happy we are getting more. I also like how it tied into the prior books and added more information to them, in addition to being a great story.

Murtagh was one of my favorite characters in the inheritance cycle, but I do hope we get to see more of Roran, Eragon, Angela, and Arya in the future books!
