About this listen

The incredible return to the New York Times bestselling world of the Night Angel, where master assassin Kylar Stern embarks on a new adventure as the High King Logan Gyre calls on him to save his kingdom and the hope of peace.

"Weeks has been showing other fantasy authors how it's done for over fifteen years." — Peter V. Brett, author of The Desert Prince

"Weeks is a giant of the genre." — Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld

After the war that cost him so much, Kylar Stern is broken and alone. He's determined not to kill again, but an impending amnesty will pardon the one murderer he can't let walk free. He promises himself this is the last time. One last hit to tie up the loose ends of his old, lost life.

But Kylar's best—and maybe only—friend, the High King Logan Gyre, needs him. To protect a fragile peace, Logan’s new kingdom, and the king’s twin sons, he needs Kylar to secure a powerful magical artifact that was unearthed during the war.

With rumors that a ka'kari may be found, adversaries both old and new are on the hunt. And if Kylar has learned anything, it’s that ancient magics are better left in the hands of those he can trust.

If he does the job right, he won’t need to kill at all. This isn’t an assassination—it’s a heist.

But some jobs are too hard for an easy conscience, and some enemies are so powerful the only answer lies in the shadows.

"Weeks writes in an inescapably engaging style. Breathlessly high stakes, terrible missteps, and unexpected revelations keep the story humming along at a breakneck pace." — Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter

Not as strong as previous books

Don’t like the new narrator. And the story was so dense and long!!!!! Hope if another book it will be better.

Two things...

First, this book is a tragedy, I know it says action adventure, but don't be fooled.

Second, Kylar is going to disappoint you throughout the entire book, especially if you read the original trilogy. Kylar is barely recognizable to me, but it has been awhile since I read the original three books.

..Trilogy?

I can only say so much without giving away the story. That said, as excited as I was to find out about another book in the.. series.. I think I would have preferred to leave things as they were in book 3. There was just too much changed for the fourth book, from the way the story is told to the uncharacteristic actions of the protagonist(s). The "Night Angel" trilogy has been one of my favorite stories for years. The way this fourth book is written, the way things play out, the way the author takes the story in this latest novel..? I didn't like it. I tried to enjoy it, but I just kept getting annoyed and exasperated. I'm sure, at this point, that there will be further installments. I'll probably even read them. But, again, if I'd had an idea of how this would go, how it would end, I'd have stopped at the third book.

This hurt like hell.

This was a tough one to get through. Brent Weeks is one of my favorite authors, but I disliked this book. All of the characters I grew to like in the Night Angel Trilogy felt absent, even though they were all in this book to varying degrees. I'll read the next books in the series, but my enthusiasm for them has definitely taken a hit.

Very good, as expected

Story is independent of the original trilogy but reading the original adds to understanding a lot.

Coming of age stage 2. Kyler now has to grow into his powers and figure out how to live his life with them.

Writing style is different and enjoyable jumping from past to present tense.

Genius, master storytelling.

A much more mature story than the previous entries, not as fast paced but much more emotionally charged. This story will make you feel more different emotions than any other. It also is much more representative of existence at large, not just in the world of the story but of life itself. Masterpiece.

Great read!

although it was 32 hours long, I wish it was longer, I just didn't want it to end! I can't wait for the next book in the series comes out.

Not what you’d expect but still worth a listen to.

A thought provoking listen with less focus on the action the previous books are known for.

Needed Editing

As always, Simon Vance is incredible. Can't praise his narration enough.

The story, on the other hand, left me wanting. The structure is interesting, but it felt very indulgent. This could have benefited from some serious editing; many scenes were inconsequential to plot or character.

Better than Most give it credit for.

I am wholly convinced that those who complained about this don't truly comprehend it
