Story
While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

I have less respect for J. Benjamin after reading this
Reviewed: 10-20-24
This book as nothing but a shallow diatribe that tries and fails to be funny. For what purpose this was ever written I do not know, but I hazard to guess that it was completely based on ego so that Mr. Benjamin could add "I wrote a book" to his list of failed pick up lines. I got this book on Audible because I love the characters of Archer and Bob and thought that I would find J. Benjamin as likable and entertaining. Never meet your heros kids, they can only disappoint you by having nothing of substance except for their voice.

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns.

The story is just not good, in fact it's pretty terrible. The story just takes everything about Alien and Aliens and dumbs it down to spoonfeed the audience. There is no suspense and the "action sequences" are just meaningless sound effects. There is absolutely nothing at stake during the whole story, I don't remember a single characters name or motivations except for Ripley. if you are an Alien fan, do not waste your time or money on this.

Story
This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

I appreciate the attempt and the book makes lots of good points but stays in the shallow end if the pool to avoid offense and we all lose so much because of that.

This is not a good story, this is akin to something that would be filler in a ScyFy channel monster movie marathon. The story is generic, with generic characters that tries very hard to give people what they think they want. The acting reminds me of a high school dress rehearsal, the dialog is cliché, stereotypical, and the jokes aren't even skin deep. None of the producers of this trash have any respect for their audience or the people they are hoping to bring into the genre.
There is no reason to get attached to any of the characters and I didn't even care what the monsters looked like.
The worst thing about this though story, is. I don't know what the original goal was, but if it was to make me hesitant to try another Audible Original, it succeeded.
No creativity, poor performance.

Story
These wide-ranging essays - on many individual political, economic, cultural, and legal issues - have as a recurring, underlying theme the decline of the values and institutions that have sustained and advanced American society for more than two centuries. This decline has been more than erosion. It has, in many cases, been a deliberate dismantling of American values and institutions by people convinced that their superior wisdom and virtue must override both the traditions of the country and the will of the people.

Story
In the early 20th century, World War I was the most devastating event humanity had yet experienced. New machines of war left tens of millions killed or wounded in the most grotesque of ways. The Great War remade the world's map, created new global powers, and brought forth some of the biggest problems still facing us today. But it also birthed a new art form: the horror film, made from the fears of a generation ruined by war. From Nosferatu to Frankenstein's monster and the Wolf Man, the touchstones of horror can all trace their roots to the bloodshed of the First World War.

When this book is focusing on WW1 and its influence on the horror genre, it's decent and informative. Unfortunately, Poole makes several cheap hit and runs on modern politics. False dichotomies, and red herrings, and domatisms abound where maybe a little introspection is needed.

Redeemed Dan Simmons Novels for Me
Reviewed: 08-31-21
I went into this book with low expectations after reading Carrion Comfort last year. I thought that book was uninspiring and mediocre at best and I'm surprised at myself for giving this one a try. I'm glad I did.
Do not listen to the weird reviews that talk about the book being too drawn out. While the ending is not the best, it's still good. There are a lot of characters and a good bit of them are well fleshed out with a lot to like and dislike about them. You will find find yourself solemn over some deaths and pleased with others. The book does a great job at building suspense and the payoffs are worth it nearly every time.
I will not be so hesitant to pick up my next Dan Simmons novel and I appreciate that he wrote this one.
