Story
On Karell, you are either blessed by the gods, granted a unique power and the ability to gain experience and levels, or you are forgotten. Micah Silver was a boy picked for greatness. Chosen by the gods to bear a mythic power, he longed to take his place amongst the heroes and legends he grew up reading about. Unfortunately, his primary blessing only allows him to travel into the past by sacrificing his class, wealth, and levels - a psychological burden that Micah is reluctant to shoulder. But, even if Micah is unwilling, fate has a way of forcing you to face your destiny.

Great story, great characters, great system, fantastic narration, and none of the tired gamelit pitfalls like stupid childish characters or harems. Good stuff!

The adventures of Mary Sue...
Reviewed: 03-25-21
The premise started out great. Then, it became obvious that the main character could just do anything. For every challenge, he just somehow has the right spell or skill to immediately overcome the problem, and he does so easily and with aplomb. It turned into a really boring, unbelievable read with no growth, tension, or challenge.

Story
It has been two years since the Shift - when most technology stopped working, and the laws of physics changed. Humanity has been brought to its knees. Like other survivors, Noah Henson has heard rumors of the Aelves. Among other guesses, predatory aliens seem as good as any other theory for what caused the Shift. But for Noah, everything else takes second place to survival, sometimes even self-respect... or any sort of decency. Lawless, post-apocalypse America had forced Noah to make many difficult decisions, and he has never seemed to choose correctly.

Be warned that the first 2 hours of the book has a story that suddenly changes into a deeper and much more interesting dynamic for the rest of the book. This has already become one of my favorite gamelit series. Great narrator too!

Clinical depression...and dinosaurs!
Reviewed: 05-15-18
I don't even understand how this book is a book. The first 20% starts out conventionally and has great promise. Then, for almost the entire rest of the book, the main character is severely depressed and doesn't want to do anything, help anyone, or get out of bed while other characters die around him and beg him to do something. Like, fine if you need to have a little bit of this for character development, but I couldn't finish the book because it went on and on and on and I just wanted to punch the main character until I finally stopped listening. A bad, unfulfilling story that left me frustrated and angry.

Great story, very mediocre/strange narrator
Reviewed: 02-04-18
The narrator was tolerable, but I'm confused why he's even in the business. He mispronounced so many common words like stamina, proficiency, and on and on. He often swapped the vowels E and ih like in Still and Steel. Like, fine if English isn't your first language or something, or you're dyslexic, but at least the editors should catch the errors?
Story was a great continuation.

Excessive weird sex scenes that made me uncomfortable and added nothing to the story, and made up a significant part of the book. I didn't like the main character, who seemed to get everything he needed with a few polite words.

Too much politics
Reviewed: 08-11-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This was like a tea-bagger political manifesto with an incidental sci-fi story slipped in among the ranting. Even if I had agreed with the politics, it would have been too much. It was all way too distracting and constantly pulled me out of any immersion in the story. The assertions happened in practically every other sentence, from how food stamps oppress poor people, to how only people who own guns can be trusted, to how the best way to eliminate corporate corruption is to stop any oversight of their actions.
I got through the story, but I will never read a book by this author again, let alone complete the series.
Has A Learning Experience, Book 1 turned you off from other books in this genre?
I will certainly not read any more books in the genre of "Sad Puppy Champion Wanna-Be".
Did Christian Rummel do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes. Narrator was fine.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, eye-rolling, and contempt.
Any additional comments?
If you're not an anarchist, conspiracy theorist, or ignorant red-neck, you'd be better off looking elsewhere for a good book.
