About this listen

Earth is not alone. There is a towering civilization out in the galaxy, far greater than anything we can imagine. But we are isolated from the galaxy...until now.

When a bunch of interstellar scavengers approach Earth intending to abduct a few dozen humans and sell them into slavery in the darkest, they make the mistake of picking on Steve Stuart and his friends, ex-military veterans all. Unprepared for humans who can actually fight, unaware of the true capabilities of their stolen starships, the scavengers rapidly lose control of the ship - and their lives.

To Steve the captured starship represents a great opportunity, one to establish a new civilization away from Earth and its increasingly oppressive bureaucracy. But with the aliens plotting their revenge and human factions suspicious of the new technology, it will be far from easy to create a whole new world....

excellent new series by Nuttall

Christopher Nuttall is an obvious libertarian with a political style reminiscent of Heinlein and a writing style all his own.

the rate of advancement of the humans in this book seems a little far fetched, even for Sci Fi but then I don't read Nuttall for hard science fiction, I read his stuff as brain candy.

And as candy suppliers go, he beats Willy Wonka hands down.

Surprisingly good story and narration

At first, I thought the book was going to suck, as the opening read like a bad episode of star trek next generation, but then it got good, and kept getting better as it went along. I really liked the libertatian bent in style, and the homage to Heinlein!

I will definitely pick up the next in the series.

Fantastic !

A librarian buddy of mine recommended this author . I've not been disappointed yet . If you're into military SCI - FI and well thought out plot lines , you can't help but to enjoy this series .

A very good book can't wait to hear the rest...

The narrator is one of the best and makes the listening hard to stop. ....

When capturing slaves know what you have

What made the experience of listening to A Learning Experience, Book 1 the most enjoyable?

An enjoyable space opera - lots of action. Here are the added attraction of seeing the humans show the adaptability and toughness that will be needed if we ever do meet another race from space.

A bit contrived

Not horrible but could have used a bit more editing for plot holes and illogical contrivences.

Novel idea

The overall concept was interesting and the characters like-able. In this book the authors own personal angst for the US Government and a healthy fixation with porn seem to drown out the story. Also, this sort of high fiction concept seems a bit more than the author can handle outside of telling vs showing. I'm still finishing the last bit, but I believe I will buy the printed sequels, if anything more is purchased.

I agree but get on with it

The idea is pretty cool. Very unique idea of acquiring space military power but I wished it talked more about that. I can agree with the authors political standpoint but I'm interested in the story not a 6 hour lecture about how bad the government is. Spends more time explaining the governments than the ship and technology behind anything. Maybe books 2 and 3 really get going but for this first book it really isn't enjoyable even if I agree with him
