About this listen

Seamus is facing life in prison without parole. While doing his time, he's given an option by the Department of Justice and the biggest virtual game maker around, Mindblown Entertainment. If he will help them test long-term immersion, he will get the chance to play the latest game from Mindblown - Alpha World. All he has to do is sign away his legal rights and sign an NDA.

He's the first gamer to be sentenced to life imprisonment in a virtual world. What could go wrong?

Review

Here's how I rate

On narrator
5= good read speed, good pronunciation, appealing voice/voices.
4= an issue with one of the above
3= many issues
1-2 I couldn't finish because of his voice

Really liked the narrator

Story
5= good plot, keeps my attention, it doesn't ramble along, good character development
The rest follows a similar to narrator

Favorite part of the story
It's a decent concept
He pulled a lot of the mechanics from wow

Least favorite
Dialogue in places is sketchy
author referring to things he didn't know and didn't research
Didn't care for the protagonist
The end of the novel becomes s&m heavy
He pulled a lot of the mechanics from wow

Great premise, FYI a bit erotic last few chapters

Would you consider the audio edition of Gamer for Life to be better than the print version?

I prefer audio versus print. i'm dyslexic so audio books give me the opportunity to enjoy books without the frustrations of reading the print.

What other book might you compare Gamer for Life to and why?

The closest book would be "Way of the shaman" series by Vasily Mahanenko. Both share the premise of a VR prison. Both are in prison and have the opportunity to get out into the real game world.

Have you listened to any of Peter Berkrot’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not, he does a great job using different voices for each of the character. My only criticism would be that a lot of the voices seem to have a bit of an Irish tint.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and No, I listen to these on my way to and from work. Also before i go to bed. i usually get through these in a few days

Any additional comments?

The last few chapters of the book are a bit more descriptive in regards to sex. And what he does with the women in involved. With that said if they were to toned down a bit, I think it would be okay. If i were in prison for 5 years i too would want to play out some of my sexual tension. So to me it does not seem out of place. but like i said a bit to descriptive. if you go into this book know it, it should not be to bothersome.

A good male gamer fantasy

Fun book and definitely enjoyable to listen to while I was in the gym or going to school. It's funny the book jokes about a character named Mary Sue, when the character is clearly a Gary Stu. He's a polite gentleman, who knows how to unexpectedly rock the game, earning high end loot early that makes him OP, and all the ladies want him. Entertaining but this book isn't breaking any ground.

Great until the end

Im going to say this i loved this book when i started it had a interesting character with a really cool class in a strange situation and it was fantastic they abused loop holes game mechanics this really is a normal person living in a game world and i loved that right until the sex. normal i dont complain about this stuff but it takes it from a game to a harem to a sickly romantic and then it just ruins it for the rest of the series if you like this book do not buy the next one

WOW! Book was AMAZING!

I absolutely loved this book! I've been listening and reading quite a few litrpg / gamelit books lately and this one was phenomenal! I went ahead and purchased the second book with an hour to go still left on this one, not wanting to wait even a few minutes in between books. The writing was spectacular, the characters were very believable, and the story overall really drew me in. The narrator was excellent and his job at narration, so well done it almost seemed that there were multiple voice actors instead of one narrator reading this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that asks, though I would have to give a disclaimer that there are a few scenes that contain adult sexual situations. I wouldn't have a problem letting my 15 year old son listen or read this book, though I don't think I would allow my 13 year old to check it out just yet. I'm giving this book five stars and am eagerly going to book two now.

Smirk

The amount of smirking in this book is fairly high. This is a negative in my mind. The narrator lends a bit of class that takes a bit of sting out of the generic writing, but it doesn't excuse the amount of smirking. That said, the plot is pretty good. Dialogue needs work, but isn't terrible. The setting could be better established, but as the theme is familiar...I'll concede that point. Plus, this isn't meant to be classic literature... So, yeah. Three stars for not sucking completely.
